Please let us know how you like your nice find. I used a Quadra 840 for sometime, but eventually it was not getting used and just collecting dust, so I sold it. That was before they reached a cult status, so I did not get that much for it. I had the orignal installer CD that came with the Quadra and stayed with that system. It ran System 7.1.2 and ran it very well. Every system update seemed to impact some specialized subsystem of the 840 and if you upgraded to 7.6 or 8, you found yourself with just another Mac. An things that can be done with the Quadra 840 long before it became possible on other systems, is to have a movie as the desktop instead of just a picture. I installed PowerTalk which was not very valuable. There is a mail gateway for PowerTalk which allows it to send and receive eMail. That provides the capability to send and read email directly from several applications, ClarisWorks, Word, Word perfect. The DSP chip does the processing, so unlike new machines Speech Recognition is done in hardware, which actually makes Speech Recognition work fairly well without bogging down the machine. I installed and internal Zip drive and created an emergency strat up Zip disk. With this capability I replaced the internal CD drive with a CD burner, so I could create CDs directly on the machine. I used the venerable PaperPort Vx scanner to scan documents and had an Apple Color OneScanner 600/27 for working with photos. All in all it was one of the most productive machine I have ever had. I am sure you will have a great deal of fun with the machine. bill

I've got an 840 running 7.5.5 / Filemaker Pro 4 and hosting databases via web on an intranet. I don't think any of the users have a clue how retro the server is! It's proven a reliable machine...
