Hi there, My first post here and it's a question :-) I have an old Macintosh LC II and I'd like to put in something a little bigger than it's standard 40Mb hard disk. Are there any know things in regards to what size and sort of SCSI drive can go in ? Any set SCSI IDs or other settings that must be done ? I've put in a gigantic 2.1GB drive (Seagate Barracuda ST32171WC) and it is not recognised when I boot from the Network Access floppy disk. The drive is set to SCSI ID 0 ... and I think I just remembered .. terminator .. termination on this drive is not enabled and I don't have any jumpers .. bugger! I'll fix that then come back :-) Mark |

SCSI ID#0 should be OK for a primary hard drive. You need one terminator. If you have any external SCSI devices, attaching one and terminating it should be OK unless there is more than one SCSI bus in the machine. You may need a driver ie extension for the new drive. this cold be a problem. You may need a copy of HD Tool Kit or similar thrid party drivers for SCSI devices. Here is a site on SCSI essentials: http://www.essentialmac.com/fix/scsi.html Note that you can get a SCSI drive of 50 Gb from AfterTheMac.com for about $50.00. Good luck

Occasionally I get a disk that won't mount for unknown reasons. Various disk tools are available to persuade a disk to mount. I like Mt. Everything. I trust your disk has been formatted with something like Apple HD SC Setup. Can your disk formatter see the drive ok? If so it suggests the connections are ok. In my experience I've found termination is not essential on single drive arrangements.

It's been a looooong time since I last played with System 7 .. if I do not have OS disks, and all I have is the Network Access disk downloaded from Apple, what tools do I have to hand to format a new disk ? Are there any disk images of tools on the internet to use ? The only machine I have to turn images into floppies is a PC running Linux. Thanks Mark

Hello, you should try to download the disk images from apple: http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/Older_System/System_7.5_Version_7.5.3/ First you should try to boot with a 7.1 disk. If that works, you must locate HD setup on the 7.5.3 disks. If youre lucky, setup will recognize your disk. If not, you will need a patched version of HD setup that will initialize any SCSI-1 disk. I think I have the patched version somewhere. Good luck!
