I've been trying to get some 320x240 30fps videos to play back smoothly on a Powerbook 1400c/166 with OS 7.6, but I could not. I installed Quicktime 5 and MoviePlayer 2. This doesn't seem like too big of a task. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks, David |

The Powerbook 1400 is at heart a NuBus Mac. It has a 33MHz bus, a slow hard drive controller. The video is handled by a display controller rather than a video processor. Overall I think the suitability of video playback on the 1400 is probably related to expectations. To improve video playback one can reduce the size of the video, reduce the frame rate and reduce the color depth of the video file itself. You can also take steps to insure the 1400's resources are focused on the video file. Create an extension set that will boot the machine using only extensions necessary for video. Turn off any background tasks that use system resources. Create a RAM disk and play the video from the RAM disk. bill

1400s play video pretty terribly. They don't have hardware QuickTime acceleration.
