Hi all, I am currently at the begining of a kitchen remodel. New cabinets, floors, a bunch of other repairs. This is one of those things where before you start, you have doubled the budget. My new hubby has compared this project to my computer rebuilds. I recently dropped $300 on an assortment of repairs for a performa 6200, a complete upgrade on a pb 1400 and with accessories to get them to work with a Mini and a graphite imac.  I initially wanted to get the 1400 working, $50 for a new logic board, then it spiraled out of control with help and encouragement from this site. So as the poll asks, what do you think is harder? And drop a post to explain why.

I voted repairing a windows machine cuz, two months after fixing and upgrading my sisters, I'm still doing something to it. Recently adding another drive because she can't figure out how to install to the D drive which is a 40 gb. The C drive is 5gb, and it's full. My favorite quote from her is "The directions say to install on the C drive, it won't work on the D drive.' All of the software I installed is on the d drive. She needs a Mac really bad.

I voted for the kitchen as I would not know what to do.

Windows peecees are sort of computers as well, so I can make do with them.

Well it's nice to see that people here view the topic but don't post or vote. Oh well. Here's a brief update. Cabnets go in on friday may, 19th. Just finished the floor and then it's building doors. Fun. As for the peecee I'm working on, i should have the kitchen done first. Of course it would help if I could get the peecee into my possesion. On final thought for toady, you really don't appreciate the kitchen sink until you don't have one. :D

Oh the joys of flowing water and the  ability to wash dishes. The sink when in a week ago after the cabinets and counter top were installed. Had cold water and hot water for a minute, the hot side leaked. After three days with no hot water I searched the internet, using my precious PB 1400 to do so at the local coffee shoppe, I found out that you don't use teflon tape around metal threaded plumbing parts, they can cause a leak. So removed the tape and hey I have hot water and can wash dishes. So right now I am working on the oak trim.

As for the peecee, it's still waiting to be fixed. God I hate those computers. Will be doing a reinstall of my iMac DV SE operating system. That will take less time to fix than the pc.

Laters all,

Niki

Another update on a variety of stuff. the windows peecee has had a failure of epic perportions, also known as oh, don't download that file with a virus attatched. She needs a mac bad. Grrrrr.

The kitchen is nearing completion, okay 30% completion. Took out the old micrwave above the stove, knocked out some false cabinet pieces to make room for the new oven and stove. Going to do some counter removal and new counters by wednesday, 6-7, hopefully. Just not wanting to do stuff, hot here in colorado. Wish we had a/c, won't get that untill winter when we redo the heating and ducts.

Not much has changed in the kitchen, hit 100 with no a/c. Hot and not doing much.

Playing with all of my 1400's. The super 1400 with the g3 just had a successfull screen tranplant. It's now a C. The screen is super clear and bright. The blur is gone and colors look right. I'm so happy. Fixed the dead 1400 where I pulled the g3 from, a loose hdd cable. Working on the 1400 where I got the C screen from. It works just need to do an install.

I started with a 1400 cs with 64 mb ram and a zip drive module that didn't really work. No cd drive, it died. No floppy it died. A battery that wouldn't charge. In february, I think, it screamed the horrible mac death tone and I got the sad mac icon. I figured I would try to fix it by purchasing a new logic board, it's the second replacement the original died 7 days after I bought it new. So I put that in. It worked! I put in the big drive and it worked, of course I had to get creative when installing the os. I then found out my zip worked fine, logic board issue. Bought a 24x cd.

Then picked up a 1400 with a g3 upgrade in it. It came with a battery that held a 2-3 hr charge, a 2nd vst zip drive. Swapped processors and fixed the hdd cable now I have 2 working 1400's. Then I picked up a 133 1400c for the screen. $38 bucks worth the purchase. I got the screen, a floppy drive, a 6x cd drive, an a/c adapter, case, and a battery that may hold a charge. A quick format and instal of the original 1400 software to test the system and it works. So 3 1400's that work.

So take a 1400 cs 117 that was so close to dead, nearly $200 in upgrades and extras I ended up with a nice usable machine. Just need a decent pc modem and I'm good to go.

Now if I could only get some cooler weather...,

Kitchen has new oak upper cabinets. Those took some time because of a vacation. They look wonderful. And cost aboot 1/8th to do it myself than to have someone else do it.

Sis's windows machine is on her third install. Wish she would get a decent virus protection program. It's down again. So she might have to fix it herself, it takes days to get it going again.

Picked up two more 1400's at a garage sale. Makes 5 now. Hubby thinks I have a problem. Right. they are 117's c model. 48 ram. Would like to upgrade the processors to a 166, but there is problems with that. I did find a logic board processor upgrade for $30 plus shipping. Not sure yet. But concidering most processors are going for more on ebay, maybe. They will be wireless. The city council just voted to make an agreement with a company to make the city wireless. Fee's haven't been discussed yet but hey wifi anywhere would be nice.

Have a nice day

Well Updates for all that read this. Kitchen floor is done. All the cabinets are done, just need a bit of finish on one. All thats left for major work is doors. Some trim, a light and paint.

Peeeecee is alive and running. Finally got it all together and running smooth. A bigger hard drive seemed to fix all the sister issues with it. A quick note for pc users. Install everything and get it running on one drive, then copyit to a second drive, and unplug the original. Run off the second drive and if it needs to be reloaded a quick copy and your good to go. This works for some macs too.

hmmm I've done all those things before

re-done a kitchen, fixed a PC, mac and upgraded macs...  I have plently of knowledge in both PC and macs... I'd say the kitchen would be the hardest. Not because I don't know what to do, but the amount of time the process takes up.

If and when the kitchen gets done, most likey in November, I can say that remodeling a kitchen, building/fixing a pc or a mac and the rebuilding of my mustang is some of the most irrutating along with frustrating, things I have everdone. The aggrivation of the pc alone is why I no longer have one. At the end of it all I get such a great deal of satifaction out of all of it. In most cases this is what I do for fun. One week it's build a new 1400. The next week fix the sis's pc again. Throw in the kitchen and it's a hell of a good time. There is something to be said for doing it your self. My Hubby recently figured out what it would cost  to have someone do all of these projects. IT was staggering the ammount of money that was saved. We have a ton of time so that was all free. Which reminds me, I  have 17 cabinet doors to make.

Fix a pc. make a door. fix the pc somemore. Macs still running. The pc aint. Kitchen is almost done, then comes a new toy. Another car to play with. A 1953 chevy. To bad it's not 12 volt, can't run a mac. *sigh*. There are times when things just pile up. But it's not the macs. Added a gravis joystick, marathon is so much easier to play now.

Almost done. Just need tile and paint. Whew! Of course that's the last stuff. Oh, and a light. Just built a 3rd 1400, 133 this time. It runs great with 7.6. Pc died again. What is it that makes pc users so instilled to support micros$#@(*&&%t? Get a mac and you will be happy! Just found a 6 volt to 12 volt converter, so I can take my macs on the road!

Well the monday before thanksgiving the kitchen was finished. Just in time too, had a full house for the next week. A buddy brought over a directway satelite  and hooked it up to an airport basestation. 7 macs and a few pcs all hooked up online running everything from 7.6.1 to 10.4 and those dirty windows machines. This is where spare hard drives come in handy. All of the 1400's used had 7.6 installed onto a spare 750drive. Put those in and configured them all. Buried the important stuff into the systemfolder,in a folder named something like system 7 os. Inside were all the little programs and apps that I didn't want anyone screwing with. Put an alias on the desktop of what they could use and somehow it worked. Some 2x4's and old kitchen doors with a nice table cloth on it and a few folding chairs and there was a working network. Everyone was able to check emails, the fantasy foot ball was busy and there were no computer problems. Fun stressless day, sortof. From tuesday on I was using my new kitchen, have to retile where the wine was splashed on unsealed grout. In all I think 100 or so people blew threw. I'm sure it would have been more stressful if I didn't have the knowledge I have gained from this site. Thanks. And I am done with this thread. Just for you to know, Working on a mac is easier than remodleing a kitchen and both are less frustrating than a windows pc.

Happy holidays

Just saw the thread and voted for repairing the windows PC. It's sad when maintaining a computer means frequently reinstalling the entire OS.

I noticed you mentioned a 6200 in you first post but nothing since. What became of it? Do you trash it because it was "dog slow"?

I love the form factor of the 6200/6300 machines, but the hardware inside was just a mess. All except the 6360, which internally is actually a 6400/6500 machine. I own a 6360 that is fairly heavily upgraded and love the thing.
