Hi everyone. I am not as familiar with System 7 as OS X, and I'm stumped on backing up my 3400c running 7.6. I would like to clone it to another hard drive to keep as a backup. I like seeing the dates I originally created the system folder and all my files (from 7th grade in '97). Is there a way to do this similar to Firewire Disk Mode in OS X? I do have a Kanga (OS 9) and a beige G3 (OS 9) that have SCSI. Would this only be possible via SCSI? Or could I just drag the entire HD and drop it onto a compact flash PCMCIA card? |

It is possible using appropriate SCSI cables and SCSI Disk mode. It is the predecessor of FireWire Target Disk Mode. Check out this article for how to set it up: http://lowendmac.com/tf/2k1129.html

Thanks for your reply. I think I was able to find one of these connectors. I couldn't find the original Apple one, but supposedly this one will work, because it has a 'docking switch'. The only problem is my G3 has a female DB25 SCSI port, so for this particular adapter to work, I would need a male-male adapter. Would that pose a problem for the Target Disk Mode?

No, it would not. I have one of those and have used it successfully many times. Make sure to get the simplest kind possible - the small thin adapters that are simply straight circuit pass-throughs. Just a good practice to lessen the risk of needing any sort of software drivers.

Thanks again. Will this work between an OS 7 and OS 9 machine? I know 7 can't read HFS+, but would the PowerBook (7) still be able to be the host computer?

If you are using a System 7 machine in SCSI Disk Mode attached to a newer Mac OS 8/9 system with HFS+, yes it will work. The reverse will not work though.

I appreciate your help. I have a much better idea of how to do this now. I remember having an external Apple/LaCie SCSI HD when I was little, and having to turn it on before my Performaa. When OS X came around, it took a while to get used to the idea of not needing to do that.

To be fair, that was really more of a feature of FireWire, not necessarily Mac OS X.
