I need to have System 7.5.5 or higher on my LC III. That means my two choices would be 7.5.5 and 7.6.1. The LC III has a 25mhz '030 (no FPU), 20mb RAM. Would 7.5.5 be faster? 7.6.1 seemed sluggish when I tried it. Could anybody who owns an LC III or similar '030 mac tell me if  7.5.5 or 7.6.1 is faster?

I can't give a definitive answer, since the only 030 I have at the moment is running 7.1, but I'm gonna suggest 7.5.5.

I have all my PPC Macs that can run 7 running 7.6.1, but I keep all my 68k Macs back at 7.5.5. I haven't tested 7.6.1 on any of them recently enough to remember if there was a significant speed decrease though.

My reasoning is that almost all of the improvements that 7.6.1 has over 7.5.5 are PPC-only, with the exception of the better Extensions Manager and CFM-68k 4. The latter can be installed under 7.5.5 no problem though, if memory serves. I don't know if I've ever tried using 7.6's EM on 7.5 though.
But yeah, 7.5.5 is a little lighter on disk space, and probably a little lighter on RAM usage, so I'd go with that for a 68k.

I'm interested to see what someone who knows what they're talking about says, though. :)

Personally I like 7.5.5 because it is freely available from Apple.  You can buy a 7.6.1 CD / license on eBay for $10.50 shipped, but if you don't really need it, why bother?  I bought two myself for my 6500 and 3400c, but I'm on the fence about buying it for my 68k stuff.

With 7.5.5 you can also boot in 24 bit address mode which might let you run some older System 6 stuff.  You can't do that under 7.6.1.

Performance wise I can't really say as I haven't really compared the two side by side on the same system.

Well I already own 7.6, so whichever one people think is faster I would install.

I installed 7.5.5. It is MUCH faster on the LC III.

I thought it might be. Did you install both to test, or did you just go with 7.5.5 outright?

7.6.1 is what I was running on it before.
