I was playing around on my duo 230 when I noticed that there was a separate system folder tucked away in a Norton utilities folder.  It was system 7.6 and I thought Hey it's newer than 7.1.  I made a backup of the 7.1 system folder and called it 7.1 backup and moved it out of the system folder and placed the 7.6 system briefcase in the system folder.  I restarted and was greeted with a pretty mac os screen that said system 7.6 was not compatible with my 230.  I have no way of getting on the internet with my 230 but it did have Norton Utilities 2.0 installed so I was wondering if there was a keyboard shortcut that would start norton utlities without opening the system. If not, then I suppose I will have to try to find someone with an old mac and do an appletalk connection or reinstall system 7.1 or 7.5 via a scsi cd rom or floppy drive (neither of which I have).  I feel rather stupid right about now, and also pretty depressed.  I have the duo mini dock so it's feasible that I could get it fixed eventually but I wanted to ask and see if anything could be done to fix it in it's current state.

SCSI disk mode can also be used to either repair your current install or do a fresh system install. That assumes you have another Mac with a SCSI port. To install over the network, it would be necessary to first get the Duo to boot.

It is a tricky mess for sure. I am not familiar with Norton software, so I have no idea what key sequence might be involved.

wove is correct you are stuck.  i had a 230 once.  scsi disk mode is the only way to switch the folders back.

it can be fixed.  we have all pulled the trigger on a mod that we wish we could take back.

well, if you have a floppy drive for your duo, and another floppy capable mac, you could download the Network access disk (link below) off of Apple's support site and use it to boot your Duo. It has a little system 7.5 on it along with network drivers. Once booted, you can return your Duo to its former glory by removing the System 7.6 briefcase from the system folder and returning the 7.1 system briefcase. make sure your system folder has the little mac on it and you're good to go.
