Hello all... I have an 8500 that I want to put in a location in the house that has no network cable. I would still like to surf the net using my wireless router, so I need to put in wireless capability in the 8500. Any suggestions on products and pointers to venders for this... Not looking to spend a lot Thanks in advance wdurden |

Ethernet to wireless bridge is your only option, such as one of these: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1533889&CatId=1594

If I understand bridges correctly, as long as there is an ethernet port on the computer to hook one into, any computer can be used wirelessly?

After The Mac This seems to be the sort of thing you are looking for: http://afterthemac.com/product.php?id=0S9-X_usb_wifi this page sort of goes through a pile of other wireless things they carry. http://afterthemac.com/mac.php?sub=wireless Note: I have never dealt with these people myself so I have no idea of service levels etc. They are however also the people who carry a line of SCSI hard drives for older macs, preformatted. So if you do talk to them, they will most likely know where you are coming from.

Quote from: "Lichen Software" After The Mac Anything USB-related will NOT work with System 7, which includes everything on that page. Quote from: "Lichen Software" is page sort of goes through a pile of other wireless things they carry. Lots more stuff that won't work with System 7.

I just went to best buy and found a linksys wireless a/g game adapter. $30. I plugged it in to my grey imac and it worked without any setup. This is cool.

Nope ... It's not System 7. However, no one had posted yet. I think all the posts came in at near the same time or else I let my machine sit for awhile before posting ... don't know which. 1. All of these machines are wonderful pieces of hardware . The best designs of their time. 2. They only remain relevant except as a collector's item if they can be used for some purpose. 3. If the solution to this fellow's problem in purposing his machine precluded System 7, yet it was a solution to his problem or a potential solution, I am certainly not going to withhold that information. If there had been no other postings, it could have been the only solution and at that point he would have had to make a decision as to System 7 versus his purpose. 4. Though I cannot vouch for the site as I have not dealt there, they do carry equipment/hardware replacement for older machines and there was a possiblity that even if the solutions posted on their site did not fit, they could actually know of or suggest other solutions.

That's the most important point. Sometimes what you want to do just can't be done with System 7. In that circumstance, you have to decide whether what you want to do is more important than running System 7. If it is, then you have no choice but to leave System 7 behind. It's a simple matter of priorities. Fortunately, for the original poster, there is an option that permits wireless connectivity in System 7. That doesn't mean however, that a person should be denied knowledge of other non-System 7 options.

Just be sure if you're going to post about stuff that doesn't work with System 7, you should indicate that in your post. Otherwise, people may assume that it does work on System 7, since this is System 7 Today, and that is supposed to be the point of this site.

I just want to put a big thank you up for all the suggestions... I understand Dan's point about flagging what would and wouldn't work under system 7, but I do appreciate the other pointers as well... Lots of interesting stuff out there.
