Anyone ever heard of or used Internet Explorer 5.5? I downloaded it and tried it out. It appears to be virtually identical to Internet Explorer 5.1. Exception, of course, being the copyright dates. Seems Internet Explorer 5.5 is older than Internet Explorer 5.1. Anyone know anything about this? Here's my theory: Microsoft released Internet Explorer 5.0 and began work on Internet Explorer 5.5. They released a beta version of Internet Explorer 5.5 but subsequently decided to cease development of Internet Explorer for the Macintosh platform. As a result of this decision, Microsoft released what would have been Internet Explorer 5.5 as 5.1. If anyone knows the real story here, I'd be curious. Am I right? |

I am using IE 5.5 with style sheets turned off on a PB 1400 with a 333 Sonnet and System 7.6.1 as I type. I have IE 5.5 on another machine that has not had the system upgrades per this site but is running OS 9.0.4. It hangs up on Javascript errors continually. I get nothing on this machine except stalwart performance. I can't enlighten you on the history though.

Does IE 5.5 or 5.1 require Appearance Manager or any other extension that doesn't come with System 7, or will it run on a play 7.6.1 witha a PowerPC processor?

The highest I've verified to work without Appearance manager is 5.0.2. I am not aware of any version 5.5. The last version Microsoft offered for download on their web site was 5.1.something for OS X. I would just stick with Netscape 4.8.

I actually don't recall where I downloaded it from. It was most likely from a Hotline server and I'm wanting to say the preterhuman server, but I can't be certain without actually going to look for it.

I should learn not to post early in the morning. I went back and checked and I am not on IE 5.5. Iwent to http://darrel.knutson.com/mac/www/browsers.html To check IE out. This is a site devoted to macintosh web browsers. I copied the squib on IE below. ------------------------------------------------------------------------Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.0.1, 3.0, 3.0a, 3.0.1, 4.0p1, 4.0, 4.0a, 4.0.1 (last 68k), 4.5, 4.5.1, 5.0, 5.01 (PPC), 5.1b1, 5.1.1 (OSX), 5.1.2 (OSX), 5.1.3 (OSX), 5.1.3 (PPC), 5.1.4 (PPC), 5.1.4 (OSX), 5.1.5 (PPC), 5.2 (OSX), 5.2.1 (OSX), 5.1.6 (PPC), 5.2.2 (OSX), 5.2.3 (OSX), 5.1.7 (PPC) Internet Explorer page [14 July 2003] Originally based on Mosaic code licensed from the University of Illinois. Versions later than 5.0 are real Macintosh programs. In fact, this is the best full-version browser I have ever used on any OS. Version 5.1 is for Mac OS "Classic" and versions 5.1b1, 5.1.1, 5.1.2 were Mac OS X only - there was no beta version for Classic PPC. Versions for both PPC and OSX were back in synch for version 5.1.3, but 5.2, 5.2.1 and 5.2.2 are Mac OS X only and 5.1.5 and 5.1.6 are the PPC versions. Oddly enough, you could download all PPCs version directly, but you had to use Software Update to get the OSX version from Apple for versions older than 5.2. All newer versions were once available directly from Microsoft. As of versions 5.2.3 and 5.1.7 further development of my favorite browser has been discontinued. [As of 22 Nov 2005 even MSN no longer supports this browser: "If you are using Internet Explorer for Mac, we recommend that you use another browser to have an optimal experience on MSN." - link updated on 23 Sep 07, thanks Dustin!] The only reason to keep using MS IE is because it's still one of the best browsers for Mac OS 9 and the print preview feature is still the best of any Macintosh browser (thanks for the heads up on this, Woody!).

There are traces, like old articles, of IE 5.5 in the Web, but no links for downloading it. It would be fun to try this curious version. Does the 5.5 run without the AM, and will you make it available from your forthcoming server?

I won't make it available from my server because I don't believe it was intended for general release, so I'd probably be violating the terms of the license by making it available. I doubt that Microsoft would care much about a long abandoned piece of software, but I'm not going to chance it. If you're really wanting to give it a try, I'll find where I downloaded it from and I'll let you know the location. Would you be interested in that?

If it dates to 2000 or whatever you said, then obviously it's older than later "lower" versions. I doubt it's going to magically bring modern web browsing to System 7.

No, it definitely won't bring modern web browsing to System 7. I personally don't see any difference between Internet Explorer 5.5b1 and Internet Explorer 5.1. That's pretty much why I started this topic. I'm of the opinion that 5.1 and 5.5b1 are one in the same.

Quote from: "madmann" i just upgraded my 7600 with memory and a hd and the 400 mhs g3 processor. Internet Explorer 5.5 was installed by the OS 9.1 installer? I'm afraid you are mistaken. There never was an official 5.5 release of Internet Explorer for Macintosh. Not for Classic Mac OS (OS 9 and earlier) and not for OS X.
