will the new wide screens work with os 7.6.1 i am reluctant to try. How can you know if they will work with your graphics card? will dans video extension help with this? help me out? |

Me and Rick Lawson have actually been working on a utility just for this purpose. First, you have to make sure you have a Radeon 7000, and then make sure that it supports your widescreen's resolution. Mine supports my 1680 x 1050 display just fine.

that will work for a pci machine running 7.6.1 what do you think about an os 8 or 9 machine would a rage 128 card do it also?

We've got it working actually. The only part we haven't figured out yet is how to make it change the resolution during the boot process. As it is now, you have to launch it and select your widescreen resolution from the list any time you want it changed. If anyone has experience writing system extensions that would be helpful. Here is a screenshot of Mac OS 7.6.1 running at my ViewSonic VG2230wm's native 1680 x 1050 resolution: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e3/Os761.png I don't have a System 7 desktop here to use to take a screenshot of the utility with. I also don't feel it's ready for prime time yet, so I'm not yet going to post it for download. If somebody wants to try it just send me a private message.

just to give everyone an update, we have the system extension working now so resolution gets set at startup. We still need to test with multiple cards, etc and try to break it but it's getting close to release. Hooray for development on a 12 year old machine for an obsolete OS ! Try explaining that hobby to the wife...

MORE UPDATES: Well, I finally got around to acquiring a PCI Radeon with a DVI port, and have learned some interesting things today playing around with it. Mac OS 7.6.x Natively Recognizes DVI Resolutions With my older 22" ViewSonic VG2230wm and VGA-only Radeon card, I needed this utility we are creating to "hack" System 7 to display at the ViewSonic's native resolution of 1680 x 1050. Today, however, I've discovered that with my Apple 23" ACD connected to my new DVI-equipped Radeon, System 7 natively recognizes all of the resolutions and our utility is completely unnecessary in this situation. Development not in Vain While the System 7 machine I tested with miraculously recognized all the resolutions without any hacks, it is still unlikely that any VGA displays or cards will work without the utility. For these situations, the Resolution Manager utility is still useful. Additionally, while System 7 natively recognized the resolution of my ACD, it thought there was a second display connected as well, sized 1x2 pixels, and so shows two Monitors & Sound control panels. I'm not sure what this means, but the Resolution Manager utility may still be useful even for DVI setups, especially if you have two displays. A Video! For your enjoyment, you can find a QuickTime video of a 6500 booting an unmodified installation of Mac OS 7.6.1 connected to a 23" ACD here.

Just got in one of the 2 radeon (not 7000) pci mac editions I ordered for my 7600... oddly enough, on my Acer P191W, _BOTH_ DVI and VGA recognize the native resolution of 1400x900 Just thought I should throw that out.. given that my cable modem is acting up at home, I haven't been able to get all the software kinks worked on in this new install as 3d is feeling sluggish with the System 7 ATI drivers.
