I was perusing eBay for interesting upgrades for my two Mac computers and came across this thing:

Avid Advanced JPEG Processor.

I've been all over Google looking for information on this thing and can find absolutely nothing.   So I ask you folks.

1)   What is it?

2)   What is it good for?

3)   Why would anyone want it?

I think it's some kind of coprocessor for imaging.

Any idea what it might be used for?   I was considering purchasing one for my Quadra 700, but if it will provide no practical benefit I won't bother.

When used today jpeg almost always refers specifically to still images. In the early to mid nineties it was also being developed as a video compression format. At first it was very jerky, but as it advanced the video became fairly good. I think however it never really gained traction and was passed over.

RasterOp's VideoVision series of cards, were jpeg compression cards for NuBus machines. I would suspect the one on ebay is quite similar. Since it is only a compressor card, one would still need a card or an AV Mac to provide capture. Overall I do not see there would be any compelling reason to try and make this card useful.

You could look to see if the RasterOp's software is around and if it would work with this card. Avid's old products are floating around the net and you might take a look to see if their applications include some native support for their own brand of cards.

I was kind of hoping that it would be useful for decompressing and displaying JPEG images on the screen.   I don't know if you've ever messed around with JPEGview or GraphicConverter on a 68k Macintosh, but displaying JPEG images on a 68k Macintosh is painfully slow.

On 68k machines, I use Jade. Very small lightweight, nothing fancy, but it seems pretty snappy.
