I have a Performa 6400/200 with a flashing question mark on a floppy icon at boot. It seems to be ignoring the cdrom (or i burned it wrong). How should I go about installing 7.6.1? I have an .img file my friend made me and i burned it with cdrecord. I have linux and windows at my disposal.

The flashing question mark indicates that the machine can not locate a valid system folder to boot from.

As far as I know an iso image should burn correctly regardless of the platform that burns it. It is possible that the image was not made correctly when made.

To insure you start from the CD ROM drive it is best to hold down the "C" key when you start the computer. Burned images can often take a long time to be recognized by the system.

Boot from the 7.5.5 Network Startup floppy image from Apple. Rawrite it to a floppy, and start the setup from that if you can.

wget http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/Utilities/Network_Access_Disk_7.5.sea.bin

run StuffIt -> Network Access Disk 7.5.sea
run StuffIt -> Network Access/Network Access.image

dd if=Network\ Access/Network\ Access.image of=/dev/fd0 bs=84 skip=1

and i get "This startup disk will not work on this macintosh model. Use the lastest Installer to update this disk." guess i need 7.5.5 disks>

If the CD ROM will not even spin up, then it will take a good deal of effort to get floppies for the system install and then install the system.

I personally think the most direct approach would be to either get the CD working again or replace it. You can check to make sure the cables are all attached to the drive. The tray on a CD Drive will open if you hold the mouse down while starting the machine.

Older drives will often have trouble reading and using CDR disks made on new machines. Replacement drives are generally pretty easy to find either on the LEM SwapList or on eBay.

If you have another working old Machine, you can put the hard drive in that machine and do a universal install from that machine and move the drive back.

Have you check :
1. the power cord of the CDRom has been connected ?  (if you can press the front CDRom button and make the trap open after the machine start up, the power cord should be connected.)
2. have you change the SCSI ID on the back to assign it to other ID other than the current number ? (not sure if you have other SCSI device connected with the same ID of this CDRom) ?

I remembered I saw the question mark before on my 6400 but later it gone after re-arrange the SCSI ID with other SCSI Hard Disk.
If your current hard disk is IDE, it should not be conflict with SCSI.
