Hi,

First post from an old school 68k user with some PowerBook 500 series and PowerPC upgrade cards wondering if these PPC cards are faster at emulating the 040 than the real 68LC40 processor.

Which runs 7.6.1 and 68k Applications better:

A PPC 603e/100-167Mhz upgraded PowerBook 540c or the stock 68LC40/33MHz?

Is the 68k emulator running on the 603e/100Mhz card faster than the 68LC40 at 68k operations?

Is the 68k emulator running on the 603e/167Mhz card faster than the 68LC40 at 68k operations?

Welcome to System 7 Today. If you somehow manage to find a 167mhz 603 upgrade for the PowerBook 500s, yes it would run 68k apps faster than an LC68040, especially once you've installed Speed Doubler 8's faster 68k emulation extension.

Furthermore, it opens you up to the world of PowerPC apps which of course trample 68k apps.  Mac OS 7.6.1 really screams on a PowerPC chip.

Make sure that if you do get the PowerPC upgrade, you re-install Mac OS 7.6.1 for PowerPC Macs, rather than the 68k version you would normally already have installed.

Thanks for the info. I have both the 603e/100Mhz and 603e/167Mhz upgrade cards and four 500 series PowerBooks. From your comments it seems the 167MHz is good to go.

What about the 100MHz? Would that out perform the LC68040?

I haven’t installed the upgrades or the OS 7.6.1 yet, but will definitely do that.

It will run 68k apps probably on par with an LC040.  Overall the system ill be faster.  PowerPC allows you to use stuff like Netscape 4.8 and Office 98.

Thanks again. I haven’t really gotten into the PowerPC thing as yet. My favorites are the B&W 68k games and cool games like Rescue! and Spectre.
