Hello all, I am new to this forum.  I have been lurking for about a week, soaking up info to get my recently acquired PB1400c up and running.  It has been smooth sailing so far, until I tried installing a wifi card today.  It is a wavelan gold card, and I am using the wavelan 6.00.4 driver downloaded from this site.  The install goes smoothly, and the card shows up on the desktop, but when I attempt to set AppleTalk to connect via ethernet, i am presented with an error message, which reads:  WaveLAN PC Card Driver (v6.00.4)  Error code #131.3(IM).  I have been tinkering for awhile now, and have rebooted several times.  I even un-installed and re-installed the driver once.  I am stumped.  I am a n00b to System 7, and the classic Mac OS in general...  I hope somebody has seen this error before, and can help!  Thanks in advance,  Zack

Was this a clean install of Mac OS 7?  Or have you had other drivers, PC cards, or anything else installed previously?

Well, the laptop had 8.1 installed on it when I got it.  I booted from the 7.6 and did the "clean install", which may not be as "clean" of an install as I thought it would be... It left behind some applications and things, including office 2001 and such... So I was kind of apprehensive, but went forward and installed all the updates recommended on the site, and installed a few applications.  I also discovered today that this powerbook has one of the NewerTechnology 233 G3 upgrades in it, so I installed the control panel for it.  (prior to that, system profiler showed a 33mhz processor)

Anyways, I poked around trying to find a conflicting driver or something, but I'm not quite sure where to look...

Hmm that's really strange I've never heard of anybody having a problem with it unless they use a bronze card.  Perhaps your card is damaged?  Did it work before in 8.1?

never tried it.  I just got the card today, and installed 7.6 a few days ago.  (honestly, I found this site via an article on lowendmac, and after reading a bit, was whole-heartedly convinced to go with 7.6, when previously I thought I would need at least 8.6 to be productive)

Also, the fellow I bought the card from personally tested it on his powerbook before sending it my way, so I am pretty well convinced that I am doing something wrong...

Is there somewhere I might look to find a conflicting driver or something?

Have you check if the card has any sound when you shake it ?  When I buoght a 3Com Ethernet III by mail for my PB5300, the seller has not bubble pack it well and when I received, I found some components peeled off from the circuit board and therefore error found.  The shock during transportation/mail has damaged the card.  Hope your card is still in good condition when you recieved.

No signs of physical damage or anything.  It came securely bubble-wrapped and all...

Update:  I wiped out my hard drive, and reinstalled 7.6 from scratch.  Did all the recommended updates, and installed the driver for the wavelan card.  Boom.  Exact same error message.  I am highly discouraged.

Sadly I'm completely at a loss on this one.  I can think of only three things - either your card is broken somehow, or your PC Card slot is broken (unlikely), or your card firmware is out of date.  From the information I found, earlier WaveLAN cards have a firmware that pre-dates version 6 of the software.  Firmware updates can only be done on a PC sadly.  If you have a PC laptop or a friend with a PC laptop that can help you out, here is what I believe are the correct firmware updates:

Here is more information about the update:

Thanks for the info.  I dusted off my old windoze laptop and popped in the card.  It read the card, loaded the correct driver, and it was happy as can be.  It even made use of the little blinky lights on the card.  I was about to try the firmware updater (I still have no clue which firmware it has), but thought I would reboot first.  Not sure why I did that, but now windows won't let me log back in without a (long-forgotten) password.
So, gave up on that aspect for now.  I then dug out an OS 9.0 disk and did a clean install of that on my 1400, to see if i could get the orinoco 7.2 drivers to work...  No dice.  It won't even read the card, or any card i stick in the slot.  Doesn't even recognize the presence of a card, let alone access it.  So, I am guessing that the PCMCIA slots on my PB are hosed.  I found a replacement PCMCIA cage on wegenermedia.com for $4.00, so ordered it.  Worth a shot at that price...   Thanks for the help!  I will report back after the minor surgery has been completed!

Cheers,

Zack

Well that certainly sucks, but does explain a lot.  As I said, I've never heard of the problem you're having.  Usually people have no problem at all getting the card to work.  Where the problems come in is getting WEP to work.

Hmmm.. If the card shows up on the desktop, then I'd say that the PCMCIA cage is working.. and since the card worked on the PC, you're in good shape there as well.. My question would be, why are you using AppleTalk? Are you connecting to an AppleTalk network? If not, then maybe that's the problem..

Now, I'm not running System 7 myself.. I'm running OS 8.6 on my PB 1400, and use the Orinoco 7 driver with my IBM card (it configures as a Gold card)
so maybe I'm not experiencing the same situation as yours.. Is AppleTalk a requirment under S7 for connecting to an open WiFi network?

On my setup, I go into the TCP/IP control panel and choose the Orinoco driver.. then use the Orinoco CP to choose the access point that I want to connect to.. simple as that..

So, not knowing what is required under S7, my opinions may be completely off base.. but it's something to try, just in case.... best of luck with your project ;)

Well, crap.  I have no idea what's going on at this point.  I replaced the PCMCIA cage (which was more of a chore than I expected), and did a clean install of OS 9, so I could try the orinoco 7 drivers.  It still wouldn't recognize this or any card.  I did another clean install of 7.6, did the appropriate updates, and installed the drivers, but the card is not recognized at all.  This is nutty.  Anybody know if the G3 upgrade card could be causing some issues?  Or anything else that would cause this powerbook to refuse to read pc cards?  I am inclined to think it is a hardware failure of some sort, which is why I jumped to the conclusion that the PCMCIA cage was junk...

If no cards are recognized at all obviously its a hardware problem with the PowerBook.  I've never heard of a G3 upgrade causing problems like this, but its not impossible.  If you have access to the original processor you should definitely try it.

Bah.  I think I am throwing up the white flag on this one.  This laptop is awesome, but I really don't want to end up replacing the logic board or something, just to get wifi or ethernet going.  Plus, classes start this week.  I think this laptop is going on ebay.  Thanks for all the help, though!  Great site you have here!
