I have some old Word files I am trying to bring back from some old discs.

I installed Word 6.0 on a Mac 5500 with OS 7.6.  The program seems to run file although the equation editor seems to be disabled.  Word reports it as installed, though the option does not show up under the Objects menu option.

I also tried to the installation on a Mac IIci with system 7 with the same results.

Is this problem due to a damaged disk in the Word installation, or is there an incompatibility with the OS?

You can also open the Word files with icWord:

http://www.panergy-software.com/buy/download.html

The app is a 30 day full version, or  pay EUR 15.71 to use it without time limit.

They have versions available for OS's 7.1-8.6, 9.x, 10.2-10.4

Is this vital for your particular documents?

One of the 3 is broken. The OS, the Word (disks) or your document disks. Floppies can become corrupt over time.

I would first try to open your documents with the icWord, as it does not take much time or effort.

For a long term solution you could download the Wordperfect 3.5e from s7t and add to it some converters to do the job too. I am not very familiar with the WP, but there is a Yahoo group "wordperfectmac", where you could do the downloads.

If you still can not open the files, install the OS again, just to be sure. This is actually the most unlike reason for your problem, but it only takes 20 minutes, as it sounds like you have not installed much else to your mac.

The third thing to do is trying to fix the floppies that have your files, with software. Here it could get tricky, as you could only get one shot.

i still use and like word 5.1 and all my docs open correctly with office 2004 mac.

you can get office 98 on ebay my 5.1 disk quit many years ago i just move the required files and pref and all is well.

I also hacked my word 5.1 to allow the spaces and paragraph markers to show up in magenta.  It was hard to tell the difference between the space marker and period

If you have a copy of ClarisWorks 5 somewhere you can update it to AppleWorks 5 free with a free update from Apple and that should enable it to read up to Word 6 documents.
