Someone asked in the forums a while ago, should he use GS or OS 7. Can not find the post anymore as the actual topic was something else. I got curious and googled. Facts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_IIGS#Apple_IIGS_System_Software An entire site with downloads, emulators and everything: http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/the_ring/index.html GS is news to me. |

I remember something like that too. The thing is, you can't go either GS/OS or Mac OS 7, as both run on different types of computers (Apple IIgs and Macintosh). And Mac OS 7 is lightyears ahead of GS/OS anyway, so that isn't really a realistic situation that anybody would be in.

I know it is not a GS vs 7 thing. The member who asked was new to mac, and did not know these are different OS's. I am not new to macs, but had not even heard of the GS. The GS-site looks very pro and it is possibly to run the GS in a PPC. Loads of apps & utilities seem to be available from the site. I actually downloaded what is necessary to do it, but it is quite unlikely that I will actually do so. Not enought time/interest, but who knows, maybe one day. In the good old days there where Dos/Windows and Mac. And they did not play well together. Now everything runs on anything, very confusing.

I forget this part from my post: Bernie emulator works with 7.6, making playing with GS possible.

Yes GS/OS is interesting strictly as a footnote in the Apple II history books. I have a few systems that run GS/OS. While it sortof resembles the Mac OS, it operates completely differently, more like a launcher of regular ProDOS programs (most apps don't run inside GS/OS). It's also really slow and doesn't have a whole lot of useful features, other than file management. If I remember correctly, the earliest versions were literally strictly a launcher. Version 6.x was the final, and that was most like the Mac OS.
