Hi! I'm trying to get my performa onto the internet via dial-up. It does not have the PPP control panel, or remote access. I installed internet config, PPP config, Mac TCP, and faxing software. I can not find PPP or remote access on any of the system disks or on the system. (It's got system 7.5) Any ideas? Thanks!

You should be using OpenTransport, not MacTCP.

I installed open transport... I still can't figure out how to connect. Do I need the remote access application, and if so where could I get it?

There are two control panels that need configuration for a dial up connection. The PPP (OpenTransportPPP or OT/PPP) is configured with your specific dial up information. The TCP/IP control panel is set to use "PPP" from a selection drop down at the top of the panel. On newer systems the rest of the information is filled out automatically during the connection, however is it sometimes necessary to fill that information if using information from your ISP.

I've got the TCP/IP installed, and when I couldn't find remote access on open transport (if it's even there). When I try to install the dialer from my ISP it says it needs remote access. Where could I find that?

In later OSes Remote Access absorbed the functions of OT/PPP. OpenTransport/PPP is what you need to use for Mac OS 7.6.1. For System 7.6 Remote access is used for connecting to an AppleTalk Network from a remote location (salesman calling into the main office, etc).

I perhaps do not recall correctly, however I seem to recall that many 7.6 installers included the Mac Internet Connection Kit, which includes its own connection assistants. You might look in the Apple Menu for some such. Also I recall there being a connection assistant located in the Internet folder on the hard drive.

This is somewhat a chicken and egg situation and can be frustrating the first time through. Persistence is often the key to success. Keep us posted on your efforts.

I needed to reinstall the system, I reinstalled open transport and the modem software and now I don't have the PPP option on TCP/IP, I'm still not finding the part either where you would put in your number, password, etc. I am running system 7.5.3 if that makes a difference!

Forgot to add that I couldn't find any internet connection kit! It kind of looks like they expected you to use eWorld on the computer I have, which obviously I can't do!

Assuming you have a way to download from the computer you are using to post from you can use this link to download the PPP software you need to make a connection.

Sooo close! I got the software installed and it tries to connect, but roadrunner dialaccess seems to require you to have installed their software at some point, even if you take it off, and the sofware dosen't work with system 7. I copied the remote access settings exactly from my ibook to PPP on the performa... so unless anyone knows away around this, does anyone know of a free dialup ISP that works with system 7?

Thanks a lot!
