I would like to get an ethernet card for my performa off of ebay. The one I am looking at says it is an asante 10 Base T ethernet card. My question is, what is the difference between 10 base T ethernet, and 10 100 base ethernet? (I think that's what it's called, I'm not sure, the kind you would just use for a normal home network). And are they compatible? Like with hubs and cables? |

10 base T is ok. The faster one would speed up mostly file transfers between two macs inside your home network, rather than to/from the net.

10 Base T transfers files at 10 Megabits per second on average. There are 8 bits in a byte, and 10,000,000 bits is your transfer speed, so you can expect a speed of 1.25MB per second from 10 Base T in the most ideal situations (which rarely happens). 100 Base T transfers at 100 Megabits per second. Converting that to Megabytes would yield about 10MB per second in the mos ideal situation (which rarely happens). Basically 100 Base T should theoretically be about ten times faster than 10 Base T, although in real world performance that rarely happens.

Thanks for the info! I bought the ethernet card off of ebay today and hopefully that will make it so I can get on the internet with my performa! (I gave up on dialup) -Joe
