Well today has been a long day of working on some great new forum enhancements. And all of this has been done on a PowerBook Duo 2300c running 7.6.1 of course, as this is my only laptop and I'm in Washington D.C. for the week. Yay for BBEdit! Private Messaging Returns Originally, this forum had a private messaging system, but it was clumsy and didn't match the rest of the site. I disabled it a long time ago planning to not re-enable it until I got around to formatting the entire system to match the rest of the site. Ever since then the site has more than doubled in size and people have been requesting it. Well now that day has come and so you'll find an inbox link in the navigation bar. The system is pretty robust and you all should find it quite satisfactory for your needs. New Topic Listing Views Now topics are listed in a cleaner and more robust manner, including how many views a topic has gotten, and who the original author was. Other Minor Changes The blue back arrows have been moved in-line with the topic and folder titles. There have been some other minor tweaks here and there to clean up messy formatting. Still to Come Search results pages are going to more closely match the new topic index layouts. Timeframe of a few days on that. Some sort of picture or attachment system is in the works too. Control Panel and Profile sections will be updated too, adding useful features and removing redundant phpBB ones. Fially, a new section of the site with a publicly accesable FTP server will be added so that users can share files and stuff. When these updates come online, notification will be posted to this topic. Report Bugs All of this was designed to work with Netcape 4.8 under Mac OS 7.6.1, with both CSS and Java disabled. Since all of this is brand new it may or may not have bugs in the system. Please report anything strange to me either by private message or via email at staff(at)system7today.com Thanks! |

OK now that I've pounded out all the bugs of the Private Messages, today's minor updates focus on the Control Panel and User Profile areas. The Control Panel is now much cleaner and I think easier to understand. And now User Profiles are way cleaner, and include a link to send a private message to whoever's profile you're looking at. So lets say you're reading a thread and you want to send a private message to somebody that posted in that thread. You can just go to their profile, click "send private message" and that's it.

Hi great work so far! One suggested feature that would greatly increase my usage of the site would be an option to login and then see all of the forum postings since last log off. The forums for purebasic have this feature and it is great for making regular checks. With such a feature, I for one would be much more likely to make it a regular daily check. Perhaps it exists now here but if so I missed it. Again, great work for all you have already done, this is a fun, useful and interesting place!

Today I added a "Recent Activity" panel on the forum home page. Probably will find that useful...

Okay, now I see what you mean. That is useful and nice, however, let me describe for you what would be the most helpful change from my standpoint. I would love to log in and be able to view all new posts since I last logged out. That way I could quickly visit each morning as part of a daily routine and see all the messages since I last was here... That would get me dropping by almost every day. It makes it quick without the effort of having to search forum topic by topic etc. As it is now, a search with just the wildcard character over the last day or last 7 days doesn't return anything. For my workaround I try a search with a common word like "the" and feel confident I hit most of the new posts, but... I know it's not like you have nothing to do now And don't misunderstand, this is a FANTASTIC place for old mac fans. Just hoping to communicate the desire a little more clearly!

I would love to log in and be able to view all new posts since I last logged out. I'm not sure how what you're seeking differs from the post icons, which are dimmed until a new post is made, and then they become white. In the picture below, the icons indicate that the Operating System and Third Party Software folders have threads with new posts in them, while Apple Software does not. 2_Picture_2_1.png I click on Operating System, and am presented with the situation depicted below, in which the top three topics have new posts in them, but the fourth one does not. Now, if I go into one of these topics with new posts, read the new posts, and then come back to this page, it's icon will go back to being dimmed. 2_Picture_1_1.png If you have hundreds of unread topics that you don't want to read but just want to get rid of, you can click "Mark All Topics Read" at the bottom-right of every folder page.

Thanks, I didn't realize the information in the icons. Duh..., sorry for the trouble you had to go to to point it out. About the only other forums I frequent are more textual and I was just particularly used to the option from my purebasic forum use where there was a link to click that then presented the new posts since last logout. I was wondering a bit how you were following things so ably, I wondered if you were subscribed to all the topics are what. LOL Anyway, I can't emphasize enough how much I like what you have done already. The mac classic size, color schemes, etc. hit the sweet spot for me. Responsive without bloat. This site keeps a candle alive!

The best forum feature is how fast it is.

I like, however I sorely miss the last post date showing up for each section of the forum. Even if it was just a simple date without a time it would be nice to keep that feature as the "recent topics" doesn't really replace it well.
