Hello,

I just picked up a PowerMac 6500/250 and I don't have a restore CD.  It came with two, but both are for 61xx/64xx/etc, one having 7.1.2 and one has 7.5.  Unfortunately I don't have the 7.6.1 it (probably) shipped with, I'll be keeping an eye out for a cheap one.  People are pretty proud of those disks on eBay etc.  Funny that the CD that shipped with the unit is fetching more than the unit does in some cases.

Is there anyway to buy replacement media from Apple?

Anyway, since 7.5.5 is legally available from Apple, is it possible to get the System Enabler 411 as well?  It doesn't appear anywhere on Apple's site that I can find, but I'm hoping somebody here might know the right URL there.  Otherwise is it legal for someone to send it to me?  Since the machine is obviously not going to work with the free 7.5.5 without it.

I have OS8.0 and OS8.5 original CDs, but I want to run System 7.  Right now I'm running with a 7.5.5 System Folder with an 8.0 System file, but obviously that isn't ideal.

Thanks for any insight.

Gamba's Site has enablers up through 410 and links to other sites with enablers. The 6500 was a popular machine and was in production for some time. The later models shipped with OS 8. OS 7.6.1 is a great system for the 6500 and well worth hunting for.

Gamba's site is focused on hardware and systems older than 7.6, however it is an outstanding resource for older Mac material.

Actually I've looked through Gamba's links that are working without finding 411.  It seems elusive.  Maybe not enough machines were shipped with 7.5.5.

I did just find someone selling the powermac restore cd for $10 with $5 shipping on eBay, so hopefully in a week or so I'll have 7.6.1 up and running.

I still would like to have 7.5.5 working if possible, so I will keep looking for 411. :)

If you can get yourself a copy of 7.6.1, then it'd really be best to just forget about 7.5.x...

Agreed, and I'll have that in a week hopefully.  It is just that the earliest System this box will run is 7.5.5 with the enabler so I was hoping to at least try it.  Turns out people have been looking for that file for years, based on my search of Usenet and not much luck finding it.

Anyway, I should be rocking next week with 7.6.1 and then I need to get all the goodies going.  This box has the audio/video in/out setup and 128MB, ZIP, etc.  I added an RTL8139D based card (editing the Realtek driver to match the PCI id) and it is on the network now and ready to go.

There is a generic USB card in the 2nd slot, but that won't do me much good under 7.6.1.  Are there any other PCI cards that are interesting with 7.6.1?  I guess a 2nd video card might make sense for that slot.  Otherwise it will just be wasted as I don't have anything interesting PCI wise that 7.6.1 would support.

I might be mistaken but I vaguely recall 6400 and/or 6500 machines not being compatible with 7.6 - they needed to jump up to 7.6.1.  This would be a problem booting and installing from a 7.6 CD as opposed to a later 7.6.1 CD.

You can make a boot diskette that will access CD drives by adding the Apple CD extension to a regular boot diskette (Here's Gamba's page for them). If you need to cut space, replace the Finder on the diskette with a mini-finder (also available on the above page).

Boot the 6500 with the boot diskette, insert and access the Apple CD; then you can format if necessary and install from the CD to the hard drive of the 6500.

like on my Q660 A/V, you can do something like this; if you have a vcr with a built-in tuner, you can pump cable to the vcr and then to the Mac through those A/V inputs.

it's cool to pop up a postage stamp tv screen in one corner of the monitor while checking email in the morning or at news time. you can go full screen as well. all the software you'll need will be in 7.5.5 or 7.6.1.

the Apple Video Player with the Video Startup extension is what's needed. this tells you that you can also watch your movies through the Mac. you can also pump a dvd into the vcr and, well, i'm sure you get it...
