I got a bigger drive out of another computer and was able to boot from the 7.6 CD and format and install to the new hard drive but I have a problem now. It ONLY wants to boot properly from the CD. I can get it to boot from the hard drive by changing the startup drive, but the taskbar across the top is missing. It only appears when it boots from the CD. What did I do wrong?? |

How far into the boot process does it make it until it stops before the menu bar (not taskbar) appears? Do all the extensions load?

If you have a cursor and it moves with the mouse (even jerky movements) indicates that the system is running and is engaged in some task. On first boot to a new install a common task going on is the desktop rebuild, which can take sometime to complete. The system may also be looking for items in the startup folder, it may be searching for a network connection. It could also be hung having troubles mounting or finding other drives on the computer. Holding down the shift key during startup with by pass all the extensions and startup times and should result in the shortest time for the system to be up running and usable. Holding down the space bar will open the Extension Manager during boot and give you an opportunity to turn off any items that may be unnecessary for your configuration, which can happen if your installer CD is one designed for different Mac. bill

In a case like this I would run norton utilities or tech tools etc to scan the hard drive. If all goes well I would then zap the parameter ram and restart. The version of tech tools on this site will get that job done well see software guide. Check out the help files you can save and delete the parameter ram. as the Wove mentioned startup with the shift key held down. Some times the parameter ram gets corrupted and will cause strange issues. I would then rebuild the desktop and restart the computer.
