I was a little surprised, as the General Forum Rules & Tips thread of the Read Me First section of this message board state that posters can not edit or delete their posts, but I witnessed the first reply to my thread Why is Appearance Manager the Devil? get dramatically longer between the time I first saw it and when I posted a followup message (rule #6) .

So, how'd he do that? Being able to edit posts is largely useful to correct spelling and such and appears to be technically possible using the installed message board software.

Is there a reason this functionality is disabled for the general membership? The person who replied to my post and later edited their post to increase its length is the site owner and a moderator so I assume that is why he was able to do so.

Dan is the admin, Wove is a mod. They are the only ones who can. And just to let you know, it's my fault we can't edit.

I don't think we should go there... let's just forget about the past, shall we?

OK, so without the story what is the point of limiting functionality?

Sorry to be so blunt but I get the distinct impression no one is going to answer my question otherwise.

Well, we had a little problem with people abusing their ability to edit posts.  Taking away that privilege was a simple solution!

If anything, I'd like to figure out some way to add addendums rather than actual edits.  As of yet I'm not exactly sure how to do that.

The forums are actually phpBB.  If you'd like to take a crack at finding an addendum mod for us that'd be great.

Is the whole "group punishment" philosophy typical here?

Think of these forums as an old fashioned email list, or an IRC room.  You cannot go back and edit things you say on those either.

Correcting yourself if you find faults in your own posts is certainly encouraged, though.

What was the question?  No, there is no "group punishment" policy.  The early versions of this forum allowed editing, but that was a long time ago.  There hasn't been editing for like 90% of the time these forums have been running.

I was making a snide comment at this:

If I knew anything about PHPBB I'd look into options to help out but I do not and am trying to be stingy with my time because I have found myself with too much going on. But I should thank you for the request to help. So … thanks.

To answer the question. Dan is very insistant that we stay on topic. Create a new thread if needed. My self and another person went through and edited our posts so that anything not on topic  wasn't in the thread. Dan had to clean up our mess. He decided that not editing posts was a simple solution. I personally like the way things are now. So that's the story.

No offense but perhaps you guys should have just not acted childish and perhaps Dan should have well … not acted like forum members are all alike.

Regardless, it is not terribly broken or anything and the world will certainly not end. One just has to make sure to hit preview before actually submitting.

I agree totally that it was childish. I take the responcibility. Of course at the time there were maybe 40 members. But still. I'd probably run my boards the same way (if I get the desire for one). To many of them become confusing and meaningless. I get what he was trying to do, and totally agree. Loveyadan!
