I just buoght a used comm slot 2 modem and plug into th CS II slot. My OS is 7.6.1, but it can't be seen in the system profiler. Anyone has hints how to check if the modem is a working one ? I want to use it as Fax & Answering machine, any software suggested ? thanks very much. |

I believe you want the "Geoport Modem" and "Telecom" software found at the Help Center. I know there was an answering machine application but I don't recall what it was.

MegaPhone was the most common software for voice communication over a modem. The Apple Telecom Software also included working software for voice communication for the Geoport modems. The CommSlot modems came from several sources. Global Village made several and they came with Global Village software. More generic modems typically used the Apple Telecomm software. During that entire period Apple was sourcing parts from several different manufactures. I just finished cleaning up and fixing a couple of PB3400s and was surprised at the variety of different manufacturers represented by the internal components. While the two units have the same specs, each has power management units, processors and ethernet/modem cards from different manufacturers. bill

Thanks very much. I tried download the drivers and it shows the Geoport extension after that and the software used the Geoport, too. But it does not work, so, I expect the CS II modem is a defective one.

Is the modem you've installed in your machine faster than 28.8? If so, judging by what I'm reading about your system software, there may be an incompatibility issue. And, you wouldn't by chance have another on board modem connected to your computer at the same time would you? That would also cause issues.

cr2032, have you considered a 5500/6500 motherboard upgrade, i beleive you can swap in the new board no problem and get a faster 603ev with ATi Rage graphics built in. Also if i remember correctly from my 6500, the CSII is a Win-Modem type slot. I would be careful with any card that goes in it if you worry about performacne.
