I have a processor card from a PM9500/180MP on the way and I am told from others on a PCI Mac newsgroup that I am subscribed to that the card will work, but that there will be little support for it pre-OSX. We are talking about a CPU from a machine that was released during the 7.5.3 era, so it doesn't seem right to me that there would be little to no multi-processor support prior to OSX.What would have been the point to putting multiple processors into a machine that came pre-loaded with 7.5.3 if neither the OS nor any applications were able to use them?? I also have a 7.6 install disc on the way, so I was hoping someone could brighten my outlook about purchasing this card by telling me that 7.6.1 does have at least some support for multiple processors. :-( |

OS 7.6 makes very little use of dual processors. Actually none of Apple's OSes prior to OS X made much use of dual processors. PhotoShop came with a plug in module that used the extra processor, but overall very little benefit was gained by having more than one processor. OS 7.6 will add extensions to support multiple processors, however there is very little (included the OS itself) that will take much advantage of having the additional processing power. bill

When you talk dual processors, usually the support is in the apps like Photoshop and stuff.

I have a PPC7500 with nPOWER 360 - Dual 180 MHz PowerPC 604e Processor card from DayStar Technology. The only limitation for access both processor come from software designer itself. You need the correct softwear extensions or aplication to use it. In this article from LowEndMac, explain this issue. DayStar nPOWER Multiprocessing Upgrade Also Sound Edit 16 software its capable to uses both processors. As I know, DayStar was Apple OEM for their MP cards, so this article aplies for those cards. The DayStar nPOWER System utilities show you mac performance. Other OS can use try in Your MP system is BeOS, which was multiprocessor OS. MultiProcessor BeOS Support Regards :-)

This is a little confusing. I followed the link to the Daystar Digital page on lowendmac above and it says that there was two upgrades in the line that used 604eev chips. Am I right in thinking that eev chips are the same as those used in the 8600/9600 300/350?? If the eev chips on the Daystar Digital boards will work in any PCI Powermac, then why won't the chips on the 8600/9600 boards??
