The idea behind my post here is to help a person who is just starting with 7.6.1 to get things going as quickly and smoothly as possible.

After installing the sites official upgrades & software, here's a list of programs which are easy to install and use, with some links for downloading.  Plus some opinions of mine of browsers etc.

I prefer free- and shareware,  and will add  more information/software later.

1. TaskMenuBar
It's like a dock for 7, quite wonderful.Everything else in it is quite obvious, but when you double click an active icon in the finder bar, all other open windows hide. Makes life much easier. http://pweb.netcom.com/~kawahara/taskmenubar.html

2. Redux
A fine and now also free backup software. It do automatic scheduled backups! Be sure  not to choose "speed read volume directories"  in preferencies, as that stopped it working. Couldn't find directories, or something. http://lowendmac.com/software/redux_2.6.2_(ppc).sit

3. Guardian Angel
Password protection. It's not military grade, but keeps nosy people out of your mac in everyday life. http://www.groomsville.co.uk/aboutga.htm

Okay, here we go. PART II

All these softwares are fine and useful (IMHO), but this is no official list of wonderfulness so please pick-up only the ones that are useful for your purposes.  All links are fresh and work as do the programs.

4. Egg Timer v1.2
This is a control strip module, and you quessed right; an alarmclock. Very fast and easy to use. I work at home and it keeps me focused.
http://www.bozos.com/lizardbreath/

5. Burn 2.5
"Files and folders dragged onto the Burn icon will be overwritten a user selected number of times with a user selected pattern, then renamed, then deleted. Both data and resource forks are deleted."

I'm sure someone can get to those files after the Burn, but not me. If there's a member who have info of how secure way of deleting is this, I would like to hear. I found that an efficient way to use the Burn is to drag all into a new folder and then choose "delete all". The link here's to http://www.pure-mac.com/ ,just incase there's someone who's not familiar with that site yet. The Burn is in: system-security.

6. WorldClock CSM 1.7
While you're in pure-mac, please pick-up this controlstrip module also. I do alot of Ebay, so timezones have a soft spot in my heart. Choose a city and there's a module showing time &date for you. Go to Utilities-Time to download it.

PART III
(The browser & mail client  one.)

At the moment the weapons of my choice are:

7. WannaBe
 www.pure-mac.com

-iCab 2.9.9a
  S7T

-IE 5
  S7T

8. iGetter (this is a download manager)
http://www.fileavenue.com/downloads/iGetter1.9.5_En.sit.bin

9. Eudora 3.1.1
ftp://ftp.qualcomm.com/eudora/eudoralight/mac/english/3.1.1/eudoralight311.hqx

10. Mail Forward
http://www.sspi-software.com/mailfwd_mac.html

Download & install all of them first, then
Open Internet preferences from your System Folder. Change mailto for Eudora, http/https for iCab.

Integration is the reason why I've chosen just these. WannaBe is really really fast, but it's a text only browser. It's very nice for reading LEM,S7T forums etc. If there's something it can't show you, open a "real" browser from WannaBe's menu bar. It works like that without any plug-in stuff to do.

Next you should open your macs  System Folder-Preferences -iCab Preferences-Hotlist.html. A browser window opens, copy the address. Paste the address to Internet Preferences-World Wide Web-Home Page.

This makes 2 things to happen. With WannaBe open, press Command & H keys and iCab's Hotlist opens up in WannaBe!  It also makes IE's homepage to be iCabs Hotlist! You will only have to keep one Hotlist/Favorites list. The one in iCab, and the 2 other browsers can use it too!

Make a 10 MB RAM disk (if you have enough RAM) on Desktop. In iCabs & IE's preferences make it their cache disk. This will speed up the browsers, and delete the caches when you turn off the mac. In iCab preferences choose it to delete cookies  and cache by itself.

Start the iGetter. It will configurate itself to find the browsers and add plug-ins if necessary each time you  turn it on. Open Edit-Preferences. As a starting point choose the following:
-GENERAL
At launch set auto, start autoloading when..., start downloading imme..., open save di..., postprocess using int..., on quit clear qu...,
-ACCELERATION
connection typ...,
-INTEGRATION
all of the choices!
-OTHER
default download folder, automatically ren...
VIRUS SCAN
browse for the Disinfectant(or what have you)

Eudora/Mail Forward combo

Eudora lite can only check 1 account and it can't do authentication. So here's how I'm doing it: My ISP don't ask  authentication  from me, so Eudora works fine with  them.

Mail Forward is a very small, specialized "mail client" that only checks and forwards mail automatically. It can do authentications without problems, and support multiple accounts! I used iCab (& in one case IE) to open webmail accounts. Then configurated  Mail Forward like a normal mail-client. In Eudora I have a folder for each of the accounts, so now my Eudora works with multiple accounts.(But only for incoming mail. All my mail goes in/out through my ISP e-mail address, so only one e-mail address out).

It works, but I wouldn't mind if someone would show me how to make Baton Mail work. Then I could have real two-way multiple accounts with for example claris emailer.

PART IV
(I got a tip for this from a man I don't know, in a bar which name I don't remember. Have fun).

11. QuickEncrypt
http://dejalsystems.com/classic/

This is an encryption software. It was formerly commercialware, but is now freeware. The link takes you to the right page of dejalsystems site and you'll find the Registration code there too.

They still sell OSX version of it. It's self-decrypting, so a person who receives your message do not have to have the software. This is an easy to use ex-commercialware so no need for any special trial and error voodoo-stuff.

Although there have been a couple security softwares mentioned in these posts of mine, I'm not an international spy (no, really  ). I'm just posting these in no special order.

Go to the site in the middle of the night (like we say in the trade) with IE 5 this time, iCab 2.9.9a doesn't really have enough firepower for this gig, Mr Bond.

I was wondering why the world at large, do not understand that my big brother is bigger than theirs? Then I understood: I haven't told them how big my big brother really is!

So here we go. TaskMenuBar isn't just a launcher or an application switcher. One can open all files, folders, HDs and infact everything in  ones mac from the Finder Bar with this thingy.  At this very moment I have open on my desktop: Notizblock(Notebook in eng. OS?), Simple Text, IE, Eudora, WannaBe, Mail Forward, iGetter and iCab.

Without closing any of those I can open and look through anything that's under all these windows without closing a single one. Which I actually just did, as I read the QuickEncrypts Read Me file from my HD 1. So there! If I wouldn't be this showy, I could have also chosen to keep all these application open and their windows hidden. That's possible  too. That way everything would have been ready for use, but no clutter on the desktop. Only thing visible would have been this Notizblock I'm writing on.

PART V
A tip to configure iCab 2.9.9a's Cookie jar.

As I mentioned briefly in PART III, it's a good thing to choose in iCab's Cookie preferencies the General setting: Accept, expire at the end of session. It's a safety issue, but Cookies do nice things too. So for those trusted sites like S7T, there's a way to keep the Cookies. It'll then be possible to tick options like log in automatically etc.

The way to do it in preferencies:
Edit-Preferencies-Cookies-Edit Cookies. Highlight the Cookies you want to keep, one by one and each time click "information". When in "information", untick:"Expire when quitting". That's it! Now they will expire at the time mentioned in the same table, under "Expiration Date" instead of when you turn iCab off.

Which to tick then, eh? You may ask. Well, before opening S7T next time in iCab, delete all Cookies. This works for the first site only. After you're done what you usually do in our beloved site, go to Cookies and do the deed of ticking. Handpick the ones that have expiration date somewhere in the future. Those are the Cookies that'll keep the information you'll need next time when visiting the site. You'll only have to do this once for each site.

For the site number 2, restart iCab, so it'll delete all but the chosen ones. After visiting, do the picking again.

No downloads this time , Pardner. But I'll post something later.
Jiihaa Silver!

PART VI
Time Management (That's calendar for you and me).

I use:
12. DoItAll calendar
http://doitall.com/calendar/

This is really the only one that's readily available for 7 (works with 8 and 9 too). It's shareware without a timelimit, so you'll have plenty of time to check it out. Works fine. Price ain't bad either.

It's competitors are:

-Claris Organizer. I tried v 2.0, it's nice but only available as secondhand.

-Palm Desktop. This is actually free and available from Palm's webpage. They bought Organizer from Claris and ... It's Claris Organizer. For free. The free downloads are from 2.6.3 and up (the current is 4. something), works with 7/8/9/X. Good point is that it syncs with Palm's handhelds. Bad point's that it need Appearance Manager to run.

You don't need a Palm for it, and can actually do a custom installation and drop the Palm part away. Maybe that would drop the need for Appearance too. But I don't know and frankly don't want to spend the time to test it. For downloading earlier versions one needs a registration code for an old Palm thing called Visor.

Go for "DoItAll Calendar"-For The Real Taste!

PART VII

13. Royal Flush 1.2.1
The Pinball game
http://www.xs4all.nl/~gp/Royal.....oadRF.html

Good Evening, Folks!

It's Friday night and something light is in order.
I have a confession to make. I never play computer games, but this I do. It' a simulation of a 1976 pinball machine, as close as you ever get to an electromechanical pinball machine in a mac.

The link is to the site, so you can read about it first.

PART VIII

Hi!
Here's a couple useful download links more:

14. asp (Apple System Profiler) 2.1.2
http://www.versiontracker.com/...../macos/431

This version is much easier to read and use than the one that came with 7.6, more info too. Looks like a one in 9 etc, but no need for Appearance Manager. Installation is a simple drag'n drop thing. The How-To is included in the downloaded file. The link is for an english version, but it's not language specific as I've installed it in to a german OS.

15. popchar http://www.groomsville.co.uk/absmac/absmac.htm

It places an extremely small button with letter "p" on it to the upper left corner of your monitor. If you think that's great, you haven't heard anything yet!

Clicking the "p" opens a window with all the hidden keyboard characters to choose from. It place the chosen letter, sign etc straight to the right place in your text. No copy/paste needed. Great when a keyboard doesn't match language you're writing with. No need to remember key combos for those ê,™, ñ, Æ, © anymore. It's also freeware, like the two others of todays downloads.

16. macpasser
http://home.swipnet.se/~w-29301/

Macpasser's a password manager and the file it keeps your passwords in is encrypted. The iCab have a keychain, but I prefer this one. You can launch your browser from it and the log-in page in question opens.

It do not fill the log-in form, so you have to copypaste. The fact that browser can't use it by itself is nice.

I like alot of a german mac site http://www.knubbelmac.de/

It's in german, but you don't need to speak german to enjoy the software download part of it.

See Ya' !

PART IX, The very last one.

17. Installer Observer 3.0.3
http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive/Archive/disk/installer-observer-303-68k.hqx

'Dis i luv.

Installed something and not quite sure did you get everything out, as it wasn't such a bright idea after all? Well, Installer Observer to the rescue! Use it to make a list before installing and ask it to compare afterwards. Quite fast, doesn't take long. And you'll find all those green little men hiding in the mac.

Use this 68k version with 7.6, even when running a PPC.

I hope some of these downloads and rambligs have been helpful and maybe a couple of the programs even news, for a person who's just starting with older macs.

Out there's loads of fine software for 7.6, so go get 'em tiger!

Kind Regards, wall

Did you tried it? I've it in all my computers. Unlike some others like it, this works also in 7.6.1. It do all by itself the combined work of Wapp pro, Quickstart and  FinderPop. A really excellent piece of software.

Yuck as in it looks terrible and too Windows-like... I'm sure it works exactly as described.  And where would all that go when you're running a program with a lot of menus such as Word or Quark?

Dan,
I'm a man of few Words (and a Quark) . Thank you for pointing out the space needed for Word etc in the finder bar, otherwise I would have forget  an important x. Please choose "Truncate Icons on the Right" in the Options of TaskMenuBar, then everything works fine.

I have to agree with Dan. It really looks too much like the Windows taskbar. I use my Macs to get away from Windows once in a while. I think it's sick for someone to add Windows-esque functionality to the Mac OS, call it an improvement and then ask for a $15 shareware fee.

(Mr Paste-Man pasted 2 posts into one  . This should be here, and not in the end of VPC 3 post).

I'm not toying with 7, while doing real work with X or Windows. So for me, making it work is important. With TaskMenuBar I can manage at the same time several open windows and applications with ease. You do not need to like it, it's enough I do. And when recommending a software the most important thing is ,that I have tested it and who ever try it won't run into troubles. I do think there are people like me who do find it useful. Ugly or not.

I don't really see what the problem is with the Application Switcher and LiteSwitch.  I don't see how that would be any more productive to be honest.  But this goes into the same line of thought that Linux does, who's myriad of customization and workflow features makes it relatively ugly and difficult to use compared to OS X and even Windows.

Well Dan, you like more of the Lite Switch and  I of  the TaskMenuBar. There's not much I can say, really.

Here's something more of Eudora that I forget from The part III. Eudora 3.1.1 can't open HTML, which is a very good thing. As 4.3.3 does, but poorly and slowly. In 3.1.1's menu is an option: open in a browser. Click it, and the HTML message in all its glory opens in iCab. Wonderful stuff!

If you look in the options with SpeedDoubler, you will note that provides options for a "secure erase." I am not sure how secure it really is, but it is no doubt sufficient to keep the casual looker and neophyte hacker from seeing your material.

Yeah, I found that. 3 passes, that's all. But Burn overwrites up to 13(!) times with ease. It do not take long either, nor lock up mac while doing it. I rather be on the safe side, when I really want to delete.

Just FYI, Apple System Profiler is located in the Important Updates list.

How many of these parts do you plan on having?

My mistake, sorry. I do usually check what's here already to avoid double posting stuff.

I'll probably run out of steam quite soon.
