I recently got a working 2GB external hard disk using SCSI-2 cable connecting to PPC9600/200 DB25 port. At the beginning, OS9 can recognize the hard disk, but when I use OS7.6.1 to boot, the ext. HDD can not be used. As I am going to format it for the Quadra950, I tried to use Disk setup in both OS7.6.1 CD and OS9.1 CD to initialize the hard disk but failed. The ext HDD has OS9.22 before my initialized, but now, the ext hard disk can not be recognized by the PPC. Is there anyone got hints that I should use any other methods to install OS7.6.1 into this hard disk ? thanks. |

A double check of the essentials is a good idea. Make sure the drive is terminated if it is on the end of the chain. Make sure the device has a unique SCSI id. Drive Setup included with OS installs from 7.6 on is generally very good at formating just about any drive, but there are exceptions. OS 9.22 is not a supported OS on the 9600/200 which may account for some of the difficulty. SCSI Probe is an old and trusted utility for locating and mounting SCSI devices. Once mounted the drive should be seen by Drive Setup. You should probably eliminate all the partitions and let Drive Setup recreate those that are essential to the Mac. FWB, and LaCie created disk formatting software for the Mac as well and older versions of their utilites may be floating around as well. bill

I finally use a very stupid method : initialize the ext. hard disk at Extended format from OSX but leaving the Option of OS9 box unchecked. Then, using OS9 installer disk to initialize the ext hard disk at Standard format for OS7.6.1. So, it works now. I think your suggested ways will be much faster.

You can format a disk with Disk Utility under OS X as System 7 "Mac OS Standard." You don't have to worry about that OS 9 option either - that's only if you're going to dual boot OS X and OS 9.

The Disk Utility for OS X does not create a drive partition that all of the Classic Mac Systems look for. The Disk Utility creates a solid file system with all structures needed present, but it does not create a driver partition. For a drive that has been previously used on a Mac running a Mac OS prior to OS X that does not matter, because the drive will have a suitable drive partition for the older OSes and the Disk Utility for OS X does not remove that partition by default. It also ususally does not matter if you are formating a drive as a secondary or non boot drive for an older system, for the system will simply use the driver from the boot drive as the driver for the secondary drive. Generally I think it is a good idea when formating a disk for use with any of the older Mac systems to check the box to include the OS 9 drivers. bill

I think this Ext Hard Disk was formated by OSX before I got it and may be leaving system 9 driver there by previous user, so it caused problem when I use OS7.6 to initialize it. I need this disk to be my Quadra 950 the only boot disk and then "return" the 4G hard disk borrowed from PPC 9600.

I think that's what I meant. I haven't done it in a while, but I know I have.
