I am getting planning a new project. Dan you should stop reading further. I am thinking about a cheap early g4 max out the memory and put a fast 1.6 ghz duel processor into it. What do you think? Better yet what do you recommend? the old mac will be $75 and i have enough pc100 around here for one more computer the upgrade will cost between 249 and 400 which one would you run? |

Thanks for that information Dan I did not know you had a mac pro. I purchased my first mac a IIci in 1992 for $3000 “student loan that I made payments until 1997. As I mentioned before, I used this machine to complete my master thesis. I vowed to not purchase a new machine until the first one was paid for. I then acquired a 7100 in 1997. I wanted one from the first time I saw the pre-released ppc machines at the university in 93ish. I liked the lem style of purchasing machines no costly capital investment. I then moved to a beige g3 a lot of trouble came with this one and finally a g3 b&w. I must now have a little more speed. The problem is that the new mac pro although fast leaves a bad taste in my mouth with the whole intel cpu thing. Its not a mac. May be I should bite the bullet and get a quad xenon. I can see that a lot more software will be available and we can stick it to the man ”bill gates” why would you run windows if you could run os 10. The lem option is to get an old sawtooth and put a fast duel processor into it and enjoy. I hate to spend money on the latest technology what do you think?

Quote from: "madmann" Its not a mac. Yes, it is a Mac. From the elegant design of the interior to the mind-boggling wire-free engineering of the interior it's 100% Macintosh. And once you have the speed of the Cores or the Xeons, going back to a G4 seems impossible.

This isn't anything more than a personal opinion, but I do like and have chosen the LEM-way myself. It's no more troublesome than buying new stuff. (For a diy kind of guy). I do try to follow the idea also in life in general, although I do not expect everyone to rebuild their cars or homes themself, but i do and get kicks out of it too. I'm not saying my way of doing things is The Way for others than myself, but saving, not loaning and buying 2nd hand can give a person tools to live a happier life. From technical point older hardware/software combo works fine too. I make my living as a photographer and for handling large files everyday doesn't mean you have to have the latest, most powerfull mac. As computers tend to break just at the most inconvenient time possible, It's good to have a back-up. Especially when your livelihood depends of it. Because my macs are all a bit old, I can afford to have several. I have never been in a situation, where I would have needed to explain to a client that I can't keep my deadline, because a mac is still in for repairs. When one gets into a health or family crisis, it's a good thing to know, there isn't many large payments waiting at the end of the month. "Waste not, want not. It's a sound principle"

to the wall I am with you " waste not want not" option 1 I would like a quicksilver 2002 but it costs enough that I would not likely upgrade it. option 2 Get a digital audio or apg 400-500 mhz and put a duel upgrade into it. any opinions ?

Obviously, as the manager of System 7 Today I am all about keeping old systems alive and useful. However, in activities where more speed matters, older systems just don't cut it. When you sit in Photoshop and Final Cut Pro all day, more is better.

2004 A.D. Open Water, a shark drama produced for $120,000 using Sony camcorders and Final Cut Pro, shows in 2,700 theaters, earns $31 million. 2007 A.D. They Used G5s for editing. Now there are people who think a G5's too slow for their homevideos and the Sony prosumer camcorders used for the film aren't really up to date enough to film grandmas' birthday party. Really, no joke. I've been a photographer for 20 odd years and been using Photoshop for the last 7 of those. My fastest mac ever, had G3 800 Mhz cpu and a B&W G3 with 450Mhz with plenty of RAM works fine too. I do Photoshop five days a week for living. I wouldn't dream of using my macs for making a movie. But no problems with Photoshop. My photos are less than 100 Mb each. If I would work with 1000 Mb files or have a need to batch process 200 photos, I'm sure I would think differently. There's a limit of how low you can go. I'm using Corels' Knock-Out 1.5 as the Masking Tool. On the box it says: 150 Mhz and up. Yeah. Doesn't work. I need a 450 Mhz cpu for it. A 200 Mhz 604 doesn't have enough punch for me, but even that could cut it for someone who's playing with 2 small jpegs once a week and isn't in a hurry. If you, the reader, don't really mind paying thousands more for hardware/software than I have, and don't have any better use for the money, please feel free to do so. New macs are better, but that's not a reason enough by itself to buy one. A faster mac wouldn't make my photos any better, nor would it bring me new, better paying clients. Here I follow an advice of Jigoro Kano:"Use only the amount of force you need to win, no more. Save your energy for your next opponent." A bit extra cash in the bank for a holiday with your spouse, that's the way to go!

Quote from: "madmann" to the wall Hi madmann! I'd go for a low Sawtooth as I've spare ram and all possible stuff to fit in it , except the cpu upgrade. I checked only the Euro Ebay prices for the mac & OWC's site for the processor. So didn't dive very deep into it. You said you've pc100s for a mac more, which takes out a Digital Audio. The Quicksilvers seem to go for much higher prices on this side of the pond at least. So unless you're lucky to find a loaded Quicksilver for a dime in Ebay, I believe a Sawtooth would make economical sense too. All my software's for classic OS, so I'd pick up a single cpu version of the upgrade personally. Good luck with your project, it's looking mighty fine!

If one already have a Sawtooth , a possible upgrade for it could be this. It includes soldering, but nothing very dramatic. My next mac's probably something like a 9600, so this's not for me. But it'd be fun: "Adding a DIP Switch and Overclocking Sawtooth's Bus Speed" http://lowendmac.com/macdan/05/1130.html
