Okay what is the difference between a powerbook and a powerbook duo? I'm guessing a duo is no ppc?

A PowerBook Duo is a family of PowerBooks.  There were many versions of PowerBook Duos:  210, 230, 250, 270, 270c, 280, 280c, and 2300c.  They ranged from 25mhz 68030 to a 100mhz PowerPC 603.

They were special because they were very small, very lightweight, could send faxes, and most importantly could do this with the associated Duo Dock hardware.

I had a duo 210 in college and it was great.  It had no floppy no cd rom to increase weight or use the battery. It did have a Small hard drive. You connected these devices to the duo dock. I was surprised they did not sell better. The dock allowed you to hook up ext monitor scsi devices and adb port etc.

Oh. Now after seeing the quicktime movie I would love to have a modern version. There are times when I hate needing a laptop and a desktop. Especially when it comes to monitor sizes. Duos are a brilliant concept, another apple product too far ahead of it's time I guess.

the mac book is close but does it have a dock?

I know there are some wintel machines that work just like a duo did, 12 years after the fact.

The Duos were actually more comparable to the 12" PowerBook G4.  Nothing but the Duo had a dock quite like that (fully enclosed, mechanical, and able to support heavy monitors).

The Docks even had their own internal secondary hard drive, two full NuBus expansion slots, and all sorts of desktop ports.  They were quite advanced.

Very cool video. Apple had a desktop replacement laptop before the term was even coined.
