After setting up the 9600/200 (OS7.6.1) with ftp, I would like to connect the Classic II (running OS7.1 with 4 MB on board, 40MB Hard Disk) to the 9600.  Because 9600 using RJ45 connecting to router to access the internet.  Is there anyway to make the Classic II accessing the internet through the 9600 server and router, instead of using modem ?

If anyone has suggestion or experience to give me some hints on what kind of software(s) I need to install into the Classic II ?

thanks very much.

I am not aware of any software for System 7.1 on the Classic. Sustainable Software sells IpNetRouter which runs fine on OS 7.6.1 (the 9600). The manual downloadable from the link is an excellent resource all on its own.

Apple distributes AppleTalk Bridge which does run fine with System 7.1. It is only a bridge allowing LocalTalk devices (using the serial port) to connect to EtherTalk devices (using the ethernet/AAUI port) via AppleTalk. As far as I know this bridge software does not allow AppleTalk devices to communicate with TCP/IP devices. Once again the included documentation will probably provide better insights.

You have some options
1.- LocalTalk Networks
Every Mac since the Plus includes LocalTalk support through its serial (modem and printer) ports. LocalTalk is slow but inexpensive, requiring only a single printer cable to connect two Macs. But if you need conect more Macs, You need LocalTalk adapter for each.

2.- Ethernet Networks
Ethernet is the most common network type for home and business. It uses Ethernet cable and connects each networked Mac to a central hub or switch.

All compact Macs starting with the Mac Plus support LocalTalk, but none include Ethernet support, so you need to add an internal card or external adapter to connect to an Ethernet network.

External adapters typically connect to the Mac’s SCSI port and provide an Ethernet port.
This is a partial list of Mac-compatible SCSI-to-Ethernet adapters. Like the compact Macs, these adapters are discontinued and can be hard to find.

I tried to install Lacaltalk Bridge but fail because the memory requested for hardware is more than 4MB on the Classic II.   Finally, I accidentally make it can see the 9600 by using MacIP inside the TCP/IP setting as  192.168.1.4 (which is the location of the 9600).

Now, the Classic II can see the hard disk of 9600 after reboot.  The speed of file transfer is  not too slow.

As I understand the local talk is not supporting the internet protocol, the netscape 3.0.4 in Classic II can not work.  That's ok for me as I can download files from the 9600 and transfer by the connection.

Thanks all of your kind advices. :)
