So, I was an 80s and 90s gaming kid and while I'd still love to game here and there, a full-time job and three kids don't leave much space for that. However, at times I had been wishing to get my old Game Boy back for a round of Tetris, Turtles or Super Mario. A recent retro computing event killed that idea. How in the world have we ever been able to play on these Game Boys and even recognize anything on those tiny screens?

Anyway, time went by until last week I bumped into the Evercade. It's an interesting eco-system where all the games come on cartridges only. No digital, no Software as a Service. Like in the 90s, you can buy, sell, swap those cartridges. Each cartridge has up to 8 games on them, either classics from the 80s and 90s or new retro-style Indie games. Each cartridges is 25 Euros (or 30$, for you Americans). There's about 600 games available, from Arcade and Neo Geo conversions to C64 and Atari 2600 games to Nintendo 64 Banjo-Kazooie and Glover. Whatever cartridge you pick up, there'll always be something you like (and potentially dislike).

What I like is that you can use those cartridges across all their devices. They have handhelds, they have a classic console to hook up to a TV and they even have a small bartop arcade machine - all using the same cartridges. Prices are reasonable, I bought an Evercade EXP-R handheld for 110 Euros including the Taito Arcade 1 cartridges. So far it's been fun to just quickly grab the thing, switch it on and play some arcade classic while waiting for something (or someone getting ready...)

Anybody else using an Evercade. If so, which machine and what are your favorite cartridges? I need more than just Taito Arcade 1 :-)

I think their business model is pretty cool in a world of digital downloads and "you don't own anything licenses".
