It seems gopherddit.com is gone. The domain has expired last June and no response on port 70 anymore. Came across the link when updating my own Gopher server and saw that it is also on the list of links on System 7 Today's Gopher server. I will miss it, it was a fine way to browse Reddit. |

Aw, what? Is there any way someone else can resurrect it? I never saw it before so it even having existed is news to me anyways... It wasn't some kind of modified FrogFind wrapper or something was it?

Better late than never. It wasn't, it was converting Reddit's web pages to gopher-pages on the fly, really impressive stuff. It couldn't have seen much use and I wonder if it would have existed much longer. I think it used old.reddit.com and anonymous access to that is about to disappear.

The whole Internet is being rewritten by AI as we speak. Linux itself consists mostly of AI code nowadays. And the "developers" remove more and more support for legacy systems from their distros these days, because the LLM's don't want to deal with "vintage parts". Seems that proprietary docu written before the Internet was even at thing is not to their liking. No surprise as these language models are being trained in large part on data, that they sucked of the Net in the first place. They got no brainz, so re-engineering code for old undocumented HW is not their thing. I imagine this also happens outside of Linux and very quickly code development without AI will go the way of the Dinosaurs. Lest someone comes up an LLM for Legacy Coding, I'm afraid that support for vintage technology will become an exotic rarity.

Sad to see it go. I'm not a reddit user but it seemed like a cool service. We need more "bridges" to the WWW so people will start Gopher more again. I wonder if there is a way to get it back online?

The domain is available for purchase/registration, so there's a start. But they would have to have had some kind of backend (Python scripts?) to query Reddit for the HTML and convert it to something Gopher. I remember that, when using it, there was a 1-2 second delay after hitting the link in Lynx and the page being served up. It's all doable but requires time and effort. Original creator probably fell short of either or both.

I heard on the Lunduke journal that someone successfully used AI to port Doom to the C-64. Seems my concerns about the reliability of that tech for vintage coding didn't hold true for very long. I think with that in hand it should be possible to develop a replacement for the old converter. To be honest, I'm ready to surrender to AI on most frontiers now, as it seems to be inescapable anyway. Can't get away from it at work. So why should off work be any different?
