A good friend of mine gave me his (or maybe his grandma's) Sorcerer game from Infocom. I was over at his house (his grandma's house, where he lived) one night and just started curiously looking through his shelf of old games, and saw it. He said I could have it, since he's not really into old computer stuff. It's a 5.25" floppy. I've tried it a few times on my Apple II computers, but it just doesn't captivate me, which I feel bad about, because I'm sure it's an awesome game. And I really try to like it. |

One reason Sorcerer may not have captured your interest is it is actually a sequel to Enchanter, and Spellbreaker comes after it. So if you played Enchanter you'd already be familiar with some of the more arcane aspects, and characters in Sorcerer. Not that I'd necessarily recommend you go back and give Enchanter a try. Infocom games are a bit of an acquired taste and if Sorcerer didn't hook you, even without having experienced its predecessor, they might just not be for you. Talk about grind and getting killed left and right...some of the puzzles require the patience of a saint.

Quote from: ShinobiKenobi: "Do any of you have any fantasy series that you liked reading?"Fantasy/SF books I used to read a while back, but not so much now. As he hasn't been mentioned, an author I read several works by, was Michael Moorcock (https), a prolific SF/fantasy/weird stuff writer and musician, from the UK. His most popular and enduring novels are the Elric Sagas, which are pure fantasy (kind of Conan meets LotR), come to think of it he also wrote the story line to at least two of the Conan the Barbarian comics. Though I preferred his Cornelious series which are more dystopian cyberpunk, than fantasy. Other authors I enjoyed tended to be the more anachistic SF writers, like Brian Aldiss and Philip K Dick, or visionary SF writers like H G Wells.

And fantasy lovers should DEFINITELY check out Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser series! They are the absolute prototypical "fighter" and "thief" in one of the most classic bromances of all ages. I've got Kindle Unlimited and there are QUITE a few fantasy books you can "buy for free" and permanently own. Of course they are almost ALWAYS the first in long drawn out series, they want to get you hooked "the first one's free!". But if any of you also have it, let me know and I can point some of them out if you haven't found them yourselves. (I've "bought" them, but haven't read any of them yet).

Quote from: ShinobiKenobi A good friend of mine gave me his (or maybe his grandma's) Sorcerer game from Infocom. These games can be hard to get in. Here's my advice: Listen to episode 14 ("Sorcerer") of the Eaten By a Grue podcast, where they discuss playing Infocom adventures, and Sorcerer in particular in this episode! If you listen just until before the spoiler section (they'll announce it) you'll get the background and story of the game and will feel like you want to tackle it

^ ^-> good advice. Thanks for mentioning the Eaten By a Grue podcast -added to my library. Also thanks to all for sharing all those titles! ![]() The cover of 'The Sword of Shannara Trilogy' and Terry Brooks, does seem to ring a bell -unsure, will have to do a follow up. Short; I grew up abroad, first Greece, then Germany, Spain, Irland, South Africa, Spain again, then Algeria. Went to German kindergarden, then attended international English language schools. At one point my English was better than my native language. I have always only read English science fiction and fantasy books. I started with 'Enders Game' by Orson Scott Card 1985 (sci fi). Plus the sequels 'Speaker for the Dead', and 'Xenocide'. Also read by same author; 'The Homecoming Saga' series (sci fi) 'The Tales of Alvin Maker' series (fantasy) (and many of his other books) By other authors: Raymond E. Feist: 'The Riftwar Saga' series (fantasy) (Magician: Apprentice and Magician: Master -can't recall if I've read the last two.) Terry Goodkind: 'The Sword of Truth' series (fantasy) George R. R. Martin: 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series (fantasy) Brandon Sanderson: 'Mistborn' series (fantasy) 'The Stormlight Archive' series (fantasy) (and many of his other books) Scott Lynch: 'Gentleman Bastard' series (fantasy) Trudi Canavan: 'The Black Magician Trilogy' series (fantasy) 'The Traitor Spy Trilogy' (sequel to the Black Magician Trilogy) Patrick Rothfuss: 'The Kingkiller Chronicle' series (fantasy) (First two books -I see now, I've got something to look forward to )All of the above with an unfathomable world of wealth and worth a read. And many, many more authors, that I can't recall for the time being -including Terry Brooks. Need my books and HD's back out of storage before I can. Books are really so fascinating, and epic, powerful and timeless! I remember having a 10 year break from reading. During a down - depression in the yearly beginning of Y2K, I picked up reading again. I remember years back when I had first started reading 'The Homecoming Saga' by Orson Scott Card -that it weren't complete when I had started on it. So I picked it up again and bought the missing books. What a rush it was re-reading those first 2-3 books again of that series. My mind generated the exact same visual imagery in my mind's eye -that I originally had gotten years before -I still remember that sensation vividly. Reading played a huge role in me -getting back on my feet! In 2008 I became dad, and couldn't find the time to read physical books, so I switched to audiobooks. The last couple of years I've mainly listened to podcasts covering new science -the time has come to switching back to reading books. PS I forgot that I indeed had read the 'Magic Kingdom of Landover' series (fantasy) by Terry Brooks: (listened 'audiobooks' -unsure if I got to listen to the whole series)

Thanks Bolkonskij for that link. Maybe that will get me into it. Those are a lot of books Cashed. A friend of mine is really big into sci fi, so I've heard of Orson Scott Card. Thanks also for all those fantasy recommendations. Thanks also for the recommendations MTT and lauland.

some of my favorite authors are Robert Jordan "Wheel of Time" series and David Eddings the "Belgariad and Malloreon" series, as well as all of Tolkien's works. I also like Clive Cussler adventure series and Lee Child "Jack Reacher" series. Also worth a mention is Ursula Le Guin "Tales from Earthsea" series. I have also read Terry Brooks Shannara series. "posted from ibook G4" Christopher.
