Mine is blue, and its optical drive is VERY picky these days... https://www.theregister.com/2024/07/24/apple_clamshell_ibook_g3_25/ Someone has gotten Windows NT 4 to run on actual Macs...not TERRIBLY useful...but interesting... https://www.theregister.com/2024/07/17/windows_nt_on_powermac_g3/ |

Mine is orange, and the optical drive on mine is bad also. I had to reinstall the system with a usb drive. The thing about NT is heresy. I would never want to tarnish any of my Macs like that.

I would give it a go if I had something to run it on. Tinkering is half the fun

Action Retro on YouTube has a video on installing NT on a G3 iMac(?). It was amusing, but he did point out that overall it had little in the way of apps and was not very useful. It is definitely something I would try if I had the PPC hardware to do it on.

I've got a Blue and White G3...I told myself it would be really silly to try NT on it, what would be the point, and it DOES feel like sacrilege to sully the poor machine, especially in its elder years... But, hey...might as well try...I'll let you guys know how it goes... Need to see what hardware is supported...if it runs on Blue and Whites and iMacs of that era, the original iBook is very similar...and since it runs on Lombards, we know they've handled some that it's a laptop, with a limited screen and odd keyboard/mouse interface, etc.

Re: Installing Windows NT on G3 Macs It feels sacrilegious to discuss such a monstrous undertaking further here, but...on the off chance one of you is as unwise as I, and tries it, my trails and travails may save SOMEONE too much grief... It feels truly sacrilegious to even try it, but I just HAD to. I just LOVE operating systems, variety being the spice of life and whatnot. So, if it is possible, it MUST be attempted... (Must run ALL the operating systems!) My precious B&W G3 has been the victim, and I've seen...very weird IDE things. Older G3's are known to have a chip that has problems with more than one device on their two buses, and mine is one of those, so weird things were expected...and, this is windows we're talking about, where it ABSOLUTELY should NOT belong, so if there weren't any weirdness, it would actually be concerning. Long story short: I can boot from the Windows CD if my optical is the master drive on the secondary bus. That is the only configuration it will boot. But Windows does NOT see any devices on the primary bus (namely the hard drive). In MacOS 8.5 all is fine (duh!). Windows DOES see both devices if I put them on the secondary (normally just the optical) bus...but because my G3 has the troublesome chip, this is not a viable configuration. Both MacOS 8.5, and, of course, Windows are extremely slow, hang, make funny CDROM noises, etc etc. (Doesn't matter which is master vs slave). This comes after trying 8 different CDROM drives I had hanging around, different size hard drives (I assumed maybe windows couldn't understand anything over 4g?), etc, and endless gnashing of teeth. In the name of sanity, I'm giving up, and woe to any who attempt to follow my steps!

A short while back the Action Retro YouTube channel (the fellow that does Frog Find) did a video on installing NT on an original PowerMac G3. I think PPC NT was mainly aimed at IBM's PPC machines, but it was/has been hacked onto several old Macs. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bcm6kd1T6ks> (newish hardware needed of course) I do enjoy looking at different OSes and different UIs. Windows has never been high on my list however.
