Hey guys, I've always wanted to relive the good old days of OS 7, but never got the chance to do so. What's the fastest machine I could get to run OS 7?

Also, where could I buy/download it?

Thanks
Vito

The Power Macintosh 8600/9600 series, at up to 350mhz.

These machines have lots of G3 and G4 upgrade choices, the System 7 compatible ones running up to 800mhz from Sonnet (Mac OS 7 is not compatible with the recent 1ghz version of Sonnet's G4).

Mac OS 7.6 must be purchased.  7.6.1 is a free upgrade to 7.6.  Try eBay.

I would recommend an 8600 over a 9600, as the 8600 included on-board video and advanced A/V features not found in the 9600.

I'm definetely considering putting together an Old-School Mac just to relive the good old days.

Would 7.5 work?

Maybe, but 7.5 and 7.6 are significantly different.  This site focuses mainly on 7.6 and it's upgrade, 7.6.1.  Mac OS 7.6.1 is faster (more PowerPC native), more stable, and more compatible with newer software (IE 5 and Netscape 4.8 won't run in 7.5, for example).

I see what you mean, ok I guess I need to search a bit further!

I totally wish my dad didn't give away all the stuff that was with his Performa, it included so much software, ARR!
