My hd that I had Sys7 on failed a few hours ago. So I took out my Sonnet Tempo Trio from my Mac OS 9 Quicksilver and put it in my Power Mac 7200/75, and put in a 6.8 GB hd from an iMac G3 in there. I partitioned it with 3 partitions. I'm currently installing Mac OS 8.1 retail on one partition, and then I'll install System 7 onto the other smaller partition, and use the third partition for my files.

It's definitley been a bumpy road the last few days, whew!

When I copied files over to my 7200 from my Quicksilver in AppleTalk, my QS usually would freeze up. So with the Tempo Trio, I'll be able to conveniently swap a firewire drive back and forth between them.

The next Mac I'm going to revitalize is my Macintosh SE, with a 20 MB hd. For the longest time it worked great, but it doesn't boot up anymore, so I hope it just needs the OS reinstalled. It seems like my work is never done lol, but at least it gives me something to do :P

I also just brought an AppleCD 150 home from my storage unit, but it doesn't seem to be able to read CDs. No biggie though. I might try recapping it sometime.

An SE with a 20MB hard drive was my first Mac. It was a delightful machine. I ran System 6.0.5 on it for the entire time I had it. ClarisWorks was my main application and I am sure I did everything I needed to get done on that machine. A truly wonderful and unobtrusive machine to work on.

Hope you get it back up and running very soon. And of course welcome to the forum.

I agree. And if you get it upgraded to 4 MB, it's actually an OK machine for System 7.1 even. They are very sturdy, usually no recapping required. Do you get something on the screen or does it stay black / grey?

Like I said, focus on one or two models and fully optimize them to get the max out. With too many Macs you'll just spend too much time for maintenance :)

Oh one should not discount the big pop and puffs of smoke from a failing PSU. The pungent aroma of exotic solvents and glues are always a cheap thrill. The intoxicating smell of molten solder lets one know that real progress is being made.

If it were not for maintenance we would be forever stuck dictating messages and searching for the perfect emoji on our smart phones. Yes indeed bring on the pile of misbehaving electronics in need of careful attention.

Yeah the SE is a great little machine. I had no idea you could run sys 7 on 4 megs of RAM. I thought I remember reading a while back that system 7 needed 8 MB of RAM.

IIRC, my se just had the flashing folder icon on the boot screen. But yeah, it's a good thing I've had so many problems. I don't know what I'd do with all the free time I'd have if everything worked just fine lol 😂

Actually, 4 Megs of RAM gets you a lot of bang for your buck, especially on Compact Macs :)

In System 7, RAM is allocated dynamically to the Mac, so the less memory you have, the less your Mac's OS will get allocated. I remember seeing a few Macs like the SE with just 2 Megs of RAM: the OS got about half of that and the other half gave a smidge to run a small application and a few DAs.

Here are a few tricks Apple and others introduced with System 7:

· Virtual Memory to increase RAM as long as you have room on your HD
· RAM Doubler, which many found better than virtual memory
· RAM Charger, which complements either virtual memory tool
· You could rename any program Finder & replace the Finder!

That last trick, in combination with RAM Doubler, was especially useful to use all of your available RAM for more RAM hungry programs or games. That's where the Startup Disk Control Panel would be really useful to launch your Mac in 'App Mode'! 8) I don't believe RAM Charger could add any value to that special boot-up since it reclaims RAM used by other programs, including the Finder, but in this special configuration you're using all you RAM for your program, even (and especially) if you only had 2 Megs of RAM, and I believe you could even launch program aliases from the Apple Menu, including the Finder itself, without ever using the Finder! :o
