I know that Joshua Stein (of Wallops fame) has been developing a new e-mail client for System 6 and above, even running on a Mac Plus and up - however, no news for some months, unfortunately. D. Finnigan from MacGUI has also been working on one, as part of his TCP/IP stack, but he seemed to have stopped his work despite already having a plain-text solution up he says. A bummer! Ultimately, you won't get around using a third-party service to break up the encryption as that is a quite CPU intensive task your average System 6 Mac sporting a 68000 CPU won't be able to do. Or at least not in any reasonable time.

Seems like Dog Cow aka D. Finnigan reconsidered and continues working on his Sabina TCP/IP project. If you're interested in the latest, here's his posts with lots of techy details.

And jcs (author of Wallops) appears to be working on his IMAP e-mail client which has been named Carl. So it appears that there's two e-mail clients now in development with low end systems in mind. Looking forward to their releases :-)
