Hey there, off-topic today. At times I have to use OSX. One issue I've run into over the years is that it doesn't update the desktop with a file icon if I move new files there, for example by downloading. But the files are there! I have to force quit the Finder first. After reloading, it'll then show the new files. That can get quite tedious. I've had this happen from OSX versions of Tiger up to El Captain. What's the deal here? And does somebody know how to fix it? Not exactly a OSX power user here ... |

So a restart fixes it as well? I likely (as well as others) have seen this issue, but it's been years since I did anything significant in Mac OS X; unless I start fiddling with OS X again with some of the Minis I have, mostly first-gen G4s, which outside of booting with OS 9 wouldn't be likely.. well, unless I want to play with FM 6 or 5.5 server software or possibly 7, which was a big jump as far as file format (but now I'm getting further off-topic myself, lol)

I am not sure this is helpful, but this discussion poses a couple solutions to the problem of files not refreshing. (Newer browser needed.) <https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/49543/is-there-a-way-to-refresh-a-finder-file-listing> I am not sure this would work, but command-option-control-1(2,3,4,5) organizes desktop files by name, size, kind, etc. This may force a refresh/redraw of the desktop icons.

Thanks for the link, Wove!  So Command+Up then Command+Down (or Command+Back then Command+Forward if you've got a previous Finder window to go back to) should quickly refresh your icons; it sounds like an nice and easy workaround, nice!

Thank you, wove! Unfortunately, the key combo doesn't do anything (obvious), the files are still not being shown. I wonder what causes this. A corrupted desktop file list? On (the real) Mac OS a way to fix any such issues would be to rebuild the desktop file. There is no such thing on OSX as I understand?

I have had files not showing in the Finder after they are put there if the Finder is busy doing something else as well. They show up after the Finder has finished with its other tasks. It is certainly annoying. If I want to move these files or rename them before they show up, I use the Terminal, but this shouldn't be necessary.

Too bad it did not work. I just looked those up because overall it is very rare that I ever but anything on the desktop. A feature I have always liked in Linux desktops is the ability to turn off desktop icons and leave the desktop clean. I just saw your post and did a quick search to see if that was a problem and there was a solution to it. I never did try the key commands. There are times though I have wished that MacOS had a key command to refresh a view for it seems that MacOS (old and new) can be very slow to update views.
