Yes, there is a new fastest GPU for System 7! 8)

I was jealous of the MacOS 9 users having access to the Radeon 9250, and love an excuse to do something silly and educational. So, I hacked up Radeon 9250 drivers that work on 7.6.1!

https://www.macintoshrepository.org/73857-radeon-7000-9250-driver-for-macos-7-6-9-2-2

As far as I know, this is the only way to get display resolutions larger then 1920x1200 on older MacOS versions like 7.6.1. (Which makes it especially disappointing that my 9250 card is fussy about higher resolutions via DVI. 3440x1440 looks really cool on System 7, but it isn't reliable on my card.)

Wow! So it should be possible to use a 30" Cinema Display with 7.6.1 and up with this driver and card? Damn, I need to get my hands on it!

Could you upload the drivers to Macintosh Garden as well? Macintosh Repository is a bit hard to reach with older machines (to say the least).

Thanks for doing this! :D

This is pretty wild, congrats! And thanks!

Were there also PCI cards of the Radeon 8500 and 9000? IIRC they are faster/better than the 9200/9250, with the 8500 being better than the 9000.

Is there a tutorial somewhere for the resistor modification that needs to be done on the 9250 card? Maybe with pictures or something "noob-friendly" like that.

Wow, amazing effort meow_mx!!

How stable is it with high-performance stuff like 3D games? I'm thinking in terms of overheating?

I'd also like to second knezzen's plea to see it uploaded to the Macintosh Garden. After what the Repo pulled off, I ignore the Mac Suppository and its shady dealings.

Now this is what I call amazing hardware programming, and 2024 no less, something that I love seeing when it's worked on like this! :)

I also second adding this to the Macintosh Garden as older Macs can easily download this directly as Bolkonskij mentioned :) (if useful, I believe this site also has a few retro-Mac friendly system/hardware downloads as well to host your hacked drivers since Mac OS 7.6.1 falls right in line with the S7T website, just a thought) ;)

Awesome work, meow_mx! :D

Hey, we'll take what we can get!! :D Then we use them later on to build future drivers, as possibilities allow ;)

Woah!! I literally went out of my way to get a PCI Radeon 7000 working on this machine and now I see a BETTER video card works on 7.6.1?!?! Color me flustered! Now I'll have to find a PCI 9250.. LOL
As for Mac Repo vs Garden, Garden all the way. Repo is mirroring 95% of Garden and they're locking stuff behind paywalls. :/
