As some of you may remember, I recently ordered a The Old Net WiFi Modem for use with my IIci. After an initial hiccup it has been working nicely so far and keeps chugging along the net at 33.6k baud. I have not been able to set up a working PPP environment, hence I'm limited to terminal action. That, however, has proved to be an interesting experience - much more than I had anticipated. I'm using ZTerm 1.0.1 on System 7.1. After a brief check, this works flawlessly on System 6 too. As it turns out, there's quite the lively scene out there in terms of Bulletin Board Systems and even MMORPGs. To give you an example, when I logged into the multiplayer MUD Aardwolf (modern browser needed) yesterday evening, I found around 200 players logged in! Talk about surprises. I've also connected to Mac-related Bulletin Board Systems. We've talked about the Captain's Quarters II before. I've also found klud.ge, a small Mac-only board that runs on an actual 8 Mhz Mac Plus - designed to serve exactly these kind of machines. Neat! While I'm still looking forward to get PPP to work (anyone here with experience?) I'm quite enjoying my ZTerm adventures. It's fascinating to see that the net is much bigger than just the www. So take this as (hopefully) both an encouragement to start your own journey from a terminal and also share your own adventures. Are you playing a MUD/Muck? Are you regularly visiting BBSes? Next I want to look into the possiblity of accessing Usenet via Terminal, as done during the 80's. This is terra incognita to me, as it was well before my online time. |
