Hello S7T members! I have an old QUANTUM ATLAS II 4550S 4.5GB SCSI drive I’d like to use as an external backup drive on my Q605. It will be the only SCSI device connected to the Q605 during the copy process. I have it jumped for vacant ID4 (determined using Apple Personal Diagnostics). It's displayed as 245 MB but who knows what I was using this drive as last - probably on some old Amiga. APD also displays that it has "no name".

So, the question is... how do I partition and format this drive on my Q605 - OS7.5.5 system?

Okay, so did some searching and found "Drive Setup 1.7.3 Patched" that recognizes the drive. I specified a 4064MB single partition and a dialog box stated that "Driver Is Being Written To Disk". But after 45 minutes the process still wasn't finished. Seems it should almost be instant.

I tried 2 2032MB partitions and same results. Any thoughts?

I guess trying to persuade you to up your system to System 7.6.1 wouldn't be too practical? (lol) I say it because there is a version with HFS+ spliced into it (of course, I think it only works on data drives, so if you don't need it for booting-up, you could have it as a single partition!) :D

I imagine the sole version unofficially upgraded for HFS+ should boot fine on you Quadra 405 (I always liked the 405's lcII/III-small size!) ;)

@cballero

Yea... not really interested in upgrading to System 7.6.1 just for HFS+ 🤔 after like 3 years getting it to 7.5.5. 😊  I like this Q605 board in this LCIII case too. Slim Fast!

I forgot to specify that I'm using an SCA 80-Pin To IDC 50-Pin Adapter for this Quantum drive. The adapter has jumpers for ID, delay, sync, etc. But I don't think it has a term jumper - that might be a problem... although the drive shows up, it's just being a pain. I also snagged Lido. Seems like a very comprehensive app. Lido gives me a "bad scsi command: phase error" during a scan. Well, it's late and I've fooled around with htis long enough for today. 😴

I figured, lol, but I'm sure the gang will have some more wisdom to share, especially on all things SCSI! ;)

So, I dug up an Apple active termination passthru adapter. Plugged that in and tried to use "Drive Setup 1.7.3 Patched" again and after a quick scan, I got a "Drive needs low level format". I carved out a 500MB partition of the 4GB drive (so the operation would be quicker?) and hit the Initialize button. Got a message "doing low level format". I have a spinning cursor and let it go and after about 30 minutes, I hear some drive chunking and the message changes to Partitioning Disk. Okay, maybe getting somewhere! Not sure how long all this will take but I'm "Going for it"! 😎

A pic of my External SCSI contraption....

CASE CLOSED! I ditched the 4GB QUANTUM ATLAS II Drive and dug up an old 2GB Quantum Fireball 50 pin drive. I tried the Fireball yesterday but it also would not respond. I tried the Fireball again today with the termination passthru adapter and the Fireball initialized and formatted instantly. Time to toss the Atlas II 🗑

Aha, interesting! But that's only "semi-solved" kind of, isn't it?

Did the Fireball initialize much faster?

@Bolkonskij
Sorry, I didn't make that too clear... After connecting the passthru SCSI terminator to the SCSI cable, the 68pin Atlas II still didn't want to cooperate. So I retried the Fireball and it worked perfectly. Yes, the Fireball partitioning and formatting was nearly instant. I know SCSI termination is fairly elementary but I thought I had the drives themselves  terminated. I'm surprised I had the passthru in my box-o-stuff. 😄

@cballero

Yup! When in doubt, terminate!  😎
