I picked up an exceptionally nice 2006 17" MBP on eBay. I was excited because it would run Tiger and I could get some classic applications up and running. But I am a putz and did not know or did not remember that intel Macs do not do Classic. I first started in Safe Mode deleted the "FirstRunDone" file, so I could create a new account. From what I gathered before I deleted the existing user account, the earliest file was saved in May 2007 and the last file was saved in June of 2007, in a folder called "My trip to Japan". This was confirmed to some degree when after charging the battery, the system profiler reports the battery has 2 cycles on it. I do not really have any need for this machine, but it is in excellent condition. It falls into that space where it old, but not old enough to be retro, and not new enough to get into the modern period. |

Ah, such a shame, wove. And 17" display too. What a great buy, but yes, we do have to be aware of the "no classic" aspect of Intel Mac's when making purchases, if wanting classic support. Still, if your MBP is able to run an Intel Tiger, to Snow Leopard they're quite nice systems, and will be able to run some older OS X programs which newer Mac OSs cannot. Also, you are able to run PPC OS X apps via Rosetta OK too. Anyway I hope you do find a good use for it.

Were there no PPC daughterboard cards for Intel Macs?

Yikes! ![]() Like MTT said, there's some nice early PPC software both on the MG and possibly if you had Macs from that period; shoot! Sorry to hear that, Wove!

Overall I think Mac laptops from the Titanium Powerbook up until the Unibody Mac laptops, were a poor engineering effort. They tend to be complex and fragile. They are hard to work on and they had odd limitations especially RAM limits imposed on them. And what is up with SATA V1.5, that is just an Apple spec. Of course during that same period the Mac desktops were really well engineered machines. The new laptop runs 10.4 through 10.7. The last main Mac I had was a PowerMac G5, so from a software standpoint it is almost like taking off from where I left off. I installed 10.6 and restored my Leopard setup from a Timemachine backup of the G5. And everything works fine. From a user point of view there is very little difference between Leopard and Snow Leopard. For me if you can not run Classic, there is little reason to run Tiger, even though Tiger is the last MacOS that can be themed. I am enjoying the experience. Sorry for the interruption, an now back to System 7.6:)

I remember how people used to debate in Mac groups that one always should avoid the 1st gen of whatever new stuff Apple makes (e.g. first Desktop Mac, first PPC machines, etc.) Does this MBP model have any of the GPU issues that later models were so plagued with? Anyway - you can turn it into a Snow Leo machine (as you did) and run the various PPC stuff on it. Makes a nice bridge Mac between the PPC and Intel days.

Too bad the Classic Mac using a Leopard Mac printing bridge tip wouldn't work on Snow Leo it's a cool tip Dan Palka worked out fifteen plus years ago to help Classic Macs print to newer printers; I thought we had that one along with several earlier OS X tips preserved here somewhere, did we lose them? ![]() Here are the original old tip links I remember from way-back-when: http://main.system7today.com/articles/leopard/index.html http://main.system7today.com/articles/leopard/tutorial1/index.html http://main.system7today.com/articles/leopard/tutorial2/index.html http://main.system7today.com/articles/tutorials/osxfilesharing.html http://main.system7today.com/articles/tutorials/osxprintsharing.html http://main.system7today.com/articles/tutorials/osxsharedinternet.html Here are the archives from 2020 (all links need a modern browser): https://web.archive.org/web/20201018192344id_/http://main.system7today.com/articles/leopard/index.html https://web.archive.org/web/20201018221553id_/http://main.system7today.com/articles/leopard/tutorial1/index.html https://web.archive.org/web/20201018192251id_/http://main.system7today.com/articles/leopard/tutorial2/index.html https://web.archive.org/web/20201120063953id_/http://main.system7today.com:80/articles/tutorials/osxfilesharing.html https://web.archive.org/web/20201018192228id_/http://main.system7today.com/articles/tutorials/osxprintsharing.html https://web.archive.org/web/20201018192229id_/http://main.system7today.com/articles/tutorials/osxsharedinternet.html But, hey as long as we have equivalent tips somewhere on S7T, we're good!

The first Intel release was the core duo line of processors and the unit I received was a "refresh" release at the end of 2006 and it has the Core2Duo processor, so it is a 64bit architecture. Problems with GPUs really started in 2011, so I missed that as well. By nature I am an early as possible adaptor of the new hotness, but being a cheap bastard tempers that by a lot. However when stuff gets old and the price gets low I will pick up a first gen machine, just to see how bad or good it actually was. Apple's problems with hardware components started in 2011 with bad GPUs and later moved to bad keyboards. My 2006, 2008 and 2010 machines are very solid machines. After installing Snow Leopard, I used my TimeMachine backup of my PM G5 running Leopard to move my stuff over to the laptop. So in that regard, it was like I picked up right where I left off. There are several pieces of early OS X software that I used a lot. Chronories is the best journal application I ever used, Bento and CircusPonies Notebook are also very solid applications. Curio is an odd freeform application. Curio V4 was the last version that supported PPC and Intel. Interestingly Curio V4 still runs on MacOS Somoma. So anyway I have been using Curio V4 since ~2008 and is the only software I have used for well over a decade, that I can move data from brand new hardware, to the obsolete. (Technically I have been using Curio V4 for more years than I used the Classic Mac OS!)

if its a 2006 don't install Windows 10 XP/Vista makes sense maybe with a dualmoot of tiger? as tiger is the fastest by far on 32 bit intel Macs which in my thinking are definitely in the same range as a G4 in 2013 al it will take is current websites to double down on Java and the thing will be better off running a web browser like Firefox 1.5.0.2-3.6.28 out of speed and the vastly superior Web 1.1 why not windows 10 you may ask? it screams for at least 4GB of ram and a SSD while XP/Vista/7 runs great on older hardware!

Thanks for the comments @snes1423. I am not a user of Windows, so I have no plans to try and install Windows. I am enjoying the skumorphy goodness of that era of OSX. Kind of like steam punk, pointless, but a visually rich environment. There is a browser Interweb built on the last Firefox ESR for this era of machines, that works alright. The software I have and use from that era also works well. Overall I would say the speed is about the same as my PM G5. The max RAM for the machine is 3GB. Apple figured that was adequate I guess.

Unlike the Power Mac G5, it's not warming your house though ;-)

It is a room/house warmer for sure. In operation it uses about 1.5X as much energy as my little electric scooter. In that view it takes much more energy to write a letter in ClarisWorks on the G5 than it does than it does to take my scooter and deliver the letter across town.
