Interesting question...Dan is probably correct, here is some history.

All through the 680x0 era, Symantec Think C (they bought out Lightspeed C) was *the* compiler.

At the time that PowerMac's were introduced, Metrowerks was just starting up, and delivered a PowerPC compiler way ahead of Symantec. Most developers as a consequence went with Metrowerks CodeWarrior, and Symantec delivered one version of a PPC optimized compiler, and then let it die.

I have used the Codewarrior 9, 10, and 11 with OS 7.5.3...no reason it shouldn't work with OS 7.6.1. Around that time, Metrowerks started releasing "CodeWarrior Pro" and started renumbering from the beginning (1, 2, 3, etc.).
My version of CodeWarrior Pro 7 supposedly requires min. OS 8.6 .

HTH...let me know if you need any more specific info. I can dig up my CD's and test it out on OS 7.6.1 (Metrowerks installs an extension, MetroNub, that is part of the debugger; of course that needs to be updated for the system so it doesn't crash it...)
