@cballero had written about seeing his Mac 6500 disappear off to places unknown in the "Any (former) Power Mac 7500 / 7600 owners here?" thread; Quote And my biggest regret was letting go of my PM 6500 to family (only after stressing that their kids needed something to go online) who after using it a while simply got rid of it (I don't want to think about it too much, but I think they threw it away, fully working, too) without letting me know, 'hey, we're done with it' or 'it didn't fit our needs, do you want it back?' (I just hope they didn't get rid of it immediately and rather got a little fun out of it before they sent it on its sad way) but we live and learn, hindsight is really 20/20; I'm thinking that they must have thought I sent them a clunker I just had laying around so I likely didn't even want it back, sigh... That is such a sad tale that I can also relate to. I gave my Quadra 700 to my sister and family. What a classic to give away - I still regret doing that as they didn't keep it long, and it was sold off at their local church bazaar. Gee I wonder if they got $5 for it? ![]() The 700 had an Apple 601 card too, and was dual bootable as 68k or PPC. Another one was my 1400 MacBook which I gave to my nephew and family... They complained that it couldn't do Minecraft or some such games that it was never going to run... Never saw the Book again... Then my Mac SE... loaned to a friend (actual loan as opposed to a give away). Got it back again after a couple of years or so. Not working. Took it apart and the internals looked as though it had been kept in a steam-room or a flooded basement. Worst case of corrosion I've ever seem... sigh. |

haha, you guys write stories out of the book of my life ![]() Our family's LC served us well for 5-6 years until it became apparent that it was becoming too slow for anything. (well, we shouldn't have updated the poor thing to 7.5 but then, at the time, newer meant better, right?) So after the "pizza box" had been standing around unused for a year or two my parents gave the LC to my aunt. She essentially needed an electronic type-writer and was a "computer illiterate". I can see why they thought it was a good choice for her. Add to the fact that my aunt didn't have the financial means to buy a new computer. I told her "please let me know if you don't need it anymore, I'll take it back". Needless to say, I've never heard of it anymore. Years later, during a family meeting, I asked her about what had become of the LC (hoping to maybe recover our family's first Macintosh). She briefly told me that she had hardly even used it, couldn't really figure out things and that she threw it away, eventually replacing it with a cheap'o Windows PC. (...) I've got to admit I was a bit miffed about that for some time. Poor aunt has passed away a few years ago, so whatever bad feelings there were, they're gone now. (just like the LC ... sniff) I had similar stories happening to other gear, too. My father owned an Atari 520 ST with disk drives, monitor and original software. I used to play some games on it, the action kind the Mac had so few. Dad had quickly lost interest in the 520ST and it was sitting in our basement for years until sometime during the early 2000's it was time to clean up the basement. Bottom line: We sold it off for the price equivalent of two Starbucks Latte-poopaccinos (or whatever they sell there). I could still kick myself in hindsight. Truth is that we who bought and used them perceived a much higher value for them, a strong emotional one too, compared to someone who just got this "old junk" handed down and saw it just as another household appliance. @MTT - did you ever find out where that poor SE was stored for rusting so badly? I heard it can be pretty bad on coastal regions with all that salty air.

No, my friend was going through some domestic issues at the time so I didn't want to add to his worries... Where he lived was flood prone and in a high humidity environment... so I flipped the coin on one of those two being the culprit ![]() I think that if I ever loan out another Mac, I'll get the recipient to enter into a pre-nup 1st ![]() -Pizza Box LC's, also one of my favorite Mac forms, too. I do favor the III's, though I wouldn't say no to an LC 475 if one was to come my way.
