I understand most of you old-timers and die-hard Mac OS fans will probably know this stuff, but then the target audience of the section really are people returning to System 7 (or newcomers) looking for an overview. Our Applications list saw a big update. Apart from fixing some typos (nobody noticed we recommended Adobe "Premier 5.1" instead of "Premiere 5.1"? :-) ) we've added new entries for Wallops, Network Time, ModPlayer and WhatRoute. Older entries have been updated accordingly where it was due. If you find an error, a typo or just generally disagree with us, let us know please ;-) |

Testing a few hundred PhotoShop plugins and animation progs right now. OK, some of them are geared towards 8.1 but still - there is a lot of good vintage multimedia/animation stuff out there.

Way cool 68040!! the way I see it if it works in Mac OS 8.1 (68k) it still counts! ![]() I know it's crossing the line just a tad but I seriously doubt anyone else will come around and try to do a website like S7T solely for Mac OS 8.1 and that OS also stands out as the sole Mac OS for 68k Macs that is not a System 7 OS (although some argue that it's technically Mac OS 7.7 but was bumped-up to end Mac licensing for the Mac clone market) ![]() That's why I consider it the only System 7 that first-gen G3s could use, like my Beige G3 Desktop, yet it's still retro enough to run on an SE-30 and so many other 80s Macs with a little help as well!

Let's agree on 8.1 is the closest thing to System 7 you can get on some Macs :-) @68040 the plugins are very interesting. Do you think you could compile a list of 5 general use plugins that no Photoshop 5 (?) user should miss? ![]() It's getting hard to find good info on photoshop plugins. Either you have to go through old mags hit & miss or test them all by yourself the hard way.

Sorry, no PS5 on 68xxx and I am refuse to abandon the wholesome grail of 68k. I could recommend a few Plugin Packs (Bundles of Plugins) for 68k that I've tested to work on B-II under PS4 (v4.0.1), so they should certainly work on HW Macs as well. And most important: They all perform tasks that you'd still have to pay good money for to get them on your PC today.

I've prepared a short list of PS4 plug-in packs that I find essential (tried & tested on 8.1/B-II). I skipped the multimedia packs intentionally, because I'd need to upload videos to demo them and I'm not sure what classic browsers can support that.

I never got beyond PS3. I did get Kai's Power Tools. (I think I got it along with Bryce?) Kai's Power Tools were grand. It was the first graphics tools package I recall that was really fun to use. You could waste a few hours with them, just having fun and being goofy

I wouldn't call it "waste". I do all my graphic's work with PS4. Its GUI is much better than GIMP and these days you can't buy PhotoShop anymore anyway, only rent it. Which I refuse to do on principle.

I agree that on 68k Macs, Photoshop 4 is more than plenty and I love the plug-in packs you shared, 68040! ![]() I started with Adobe Photoshop 2.0.1 and Aldus SuperPaint 3 and was quite pleased with those programs back in the early 90s. I liked the 2.5 bump a couple of years later with even more features, so I found 4.0 to be quite a robust upgrade ![]() Of course for PPC Macs running Mac OS 7, Photoshop 5 should fit the bill quite nicely, Bolkonskij I'm only surprised MW or MacUser didn't run a comprehensive plug-in article to give a nice review of all of the plug-in options. Perhaps a digitized PS Bible may have what you seek? They tend to compile and review what's currently available at the time of publishing, you know?
