The primary function of a dock - besides organizing icons in one place - is the enabling of ez "drag'n drop" features. So its much more than just a "click'n start" part of the Desktop. And modern docks also offer the ability for icons changing to reflect program status. Thus a real dock is an integral part of a Desktop's overall functionality. |

Quote from: wove My first thoughts and impressions of the MacOSX Dock was that it was just a continuation and beautifying of the Control Strip and it took me a while to realize that it really served a very different function. Hah, I had exactly the same thought when they presenting OSX. (I knew nothing about NeXT computers back then) I still don't like it cluttering my interface. I still think the default position (i know, you can change that) at the bottom is a bad idea given most of our screens are wider than higher. It always seemed to me like an idea Steve liked at NeXT and just had to carry it over to OSX, whether it was actually good or not ...

I wrote my first program for a financial institution on a NeXT when it came out - and was jealous as hell that I couldn't afford one for myself. Unbelievable that what used to cost the price of a small car can now be had for less than a hundred bucks on Amazon. What an advance in technology - and yet it didn't solve a single one of our many, many problems. Good thing that dear old Isaac didn't have to live to see that.

The author is working hard on his Dock - version 1.1 has just been released. The changelog: * No longer keeps After Dark screensavers from triggering when idle * Reduced CPU utilization by being selective about when to redraw the Dock and its icons * Added "About MacDock..." dialog * Reduced RAM requirements to 64k Version 1.1 can be downloaded here. Good to see some progress!

Awesome update! ![]() And still keeping my fingers-crossed we get to see a version with color icons at some point, too!

Sure, here it is running on a SE/30 in b&w: http://revontulet.org/2023/08/02/3e9646ef17b5442ba197d74e6b6b5506.jpg Just discovered that it has since my original post seen two more updates to v.1.2 with the following changes: - Added command + click to reveal app in Finder - No longer keeps After Dark screensavers from triggering when idle - Reduced CPU utilization to 1/10th - 1/100th by being selective about when to redraw the Dock and its icons - Added "About MacDock..." dialog

As a follow-up, it keeps being worked on. Recent version 1.3.1 adds support for color.

I think it rather aims to boldly go where DragThing has never been before.. Mac Pluses, Mac SEs, Mac LCs and the like. The low-end Macs.

DragThing does look pretty nice for the high end. I've used a-dock before on my TiBook but I honestly quite dislike it. It's made pretty difficult to modify. Will have to load DT onto my 3400 and try it out! For this - seems like a definite nice to have program for the lower end stuff. Very nice!

I remember using a tool called GoMac back in the day. Of course it was sacrilage because it added a windows 95 like task bar to the bottom.

GoMac was really handy for those transitioning to a Mac from a Windows world, so many understood it's purpose was not really to mock but more of an aid to PC users!
