Wow, very nice finds Mr Web detective @Cashed! :-p

I just started reading the GNNpress manual - it's a web authoring tool, not a classic browser. Think of it like Adobe Pagemill with some HTML3 rendering capabilities. Quote from the manual:

Quote
GNNpress is an interactive authoring tool that helps you create and publish Web pages.

You can use GNNpress with or without access to the GNN Hosting Service. With the GNN Hosting Service, you will be able to save your pages directly to the GNNservers used by the service.

Might be something @Neal would want to give a try on his SE/30? According to the Garden page, it only asks for a 68020 CPU and System 7?

I haven't spotted anything about requiring 256 colors? Might be worth a try?

I found a couple of CyberDog.org archived links where enthusiasts would gather for the latest and greatest tips and tricks for this System 7, OpenDoc web browser:

http://web.archive.org/web/20010204094400/http://www.cyberdog.org/
http://web.archive.org/web/20010206194611/http://cyberdog.org/dogbones/

The second link is a very long page so make sure to scroll down for all of the CyberDog add-on software links! :)

@Neal You'll want a combination on your SE/30. Go with Netscape 2.0.2 as we recommend in our 2022 update. It's the fastest browser for your SE/30 running System 7.1 but retains graphical capabilities. I'd use that as my "standard browser" for downloading things from the Mac Garden, reading up news etc.

You'll want to accompany it with an install of either iCab 2.9.9 or Internet Explorer 4.0.1 (your case is actually one where IE4 makes sense). Use either for websites that need more features e.g. handling sessions for logging into the System 7 Today forum. An accelerator card will help with their performance.

The only older browser for System 7 that is still in development is MacLynx. It's fast, but incredibly ugly and very un-Mac in appearance. Also it is text-only.  Here is a screenshot. Uuuhh. Ugly duckling.

But it does support proxy connections! Maybe send the good dev (Cameron Kaiser) an e-mail asking for further development? A nice Mac GUI? Tabbed browsing? A search bar ?

If he sees there is some interest in it, he might turn it into a nice System  7 browser! 2-3 e-mails could make the difference .... you can reach him via e-mail. It's on his webshite, look at the top-right contact link.

Thanks. I actually don’t mind the basic text only but you are right a few tweaks to the gui it could be a winner especially for even older macs like your se. I’ll drop him a message :)

These two browsers were probably quite good in their time, but they work with so few sites now. Not even System7today :-(
Shame, because I was particularly impressed with Websurfer's uncluttered interface, and it's quite speedy. Will probably use for testing my own site - which seems to display fine!!
