Hi all,

after I've solved my family finance budgeting issue (yeah, still satisfied) I'd like to use my System 7 Mac for some family genealogy. I have some paper based family tree that an uncle of mine once created and that I'd like to make digital for the beginning. I figure this would be a cool project to do on my 8600. After all, keeping a database with entries of ancestors is something every System 7 Mac is capable (unless you're a Mormon and really digging deep ..)

Been doing a quick scan of my options here. I do look for a dedicated genealogy software and I do want it to support GEDCOM for import / export. (as it appears to be some kind of standard format in genealogy). Thus far I've ran into  Heritage 3.0.1 by TAG Software (1996) but it keeps quitting with a bus error when trying to add new people / events.

Anyone actually doing genealogy on his System 7 Mac? Or any first-hand experience?

Gedcom support (5.5ish version) wasn't really supported until around windows 95 with Unicode (think macos 8.5 started really supporting unicode utf) and mac developers left mac platform or did other formats like LDS or temple ready.
System 7 support will be limited usually to about this limit (gedcom 4, 5.2) but ymmv. Reunion 6 over at macgarden, family tree maker and this list here might help https://www.macgenealogy.org/mac-genealogy-software/

Thank you very much for this clarification! So my idea to keep it in GEDCOM format for possibly transfering to other software isn't gonna happen. Well, you probably spared me a disappointment!

Reunion 6 and Family Tree Maker look very nice, I gonna give them a look this weekend!

Would something like this do?

"Personal Ancestral File: Genealogical Management System for Home Computers"
https://www.ebay.com/itm/143896503424

It's not available on the Garden as far as I can tell, so would be a good opportunity for software archival, if nothing else!

Thanks for the link!

Amazingly, someone uploaded Personal Ancestral File just yesterday to the Mac Garden (sheer coincidence or is user EkriirkE on here too? :-) )

Gonna give it a try, seems like a bares-bones approach with very little overhead, great for System 6 and low end System 7 Macs.

Reunion versions 4, 5 and 6 on the Garden are advertised as supporting GEDCOM. I haven't tried to use these versions or using GEDCOM import or output with them. However, I have a soft spot for Reunion as I use a modern version to record my family tree.

Yay, mrdav on System 7 Today! Welcome :-)

Didn't manage to try out any of the titles yet but hope to be able to get to it in the evening. (though I'll be visiting a acquaintance this afternoon who says he has lots of old System 7 Mac stuff that he'd love to dump on me. Not sure how much time I'll have in the evening :-) )

Glad you might have found some software that could work for you. I use gramps on windows 10, though it supports gedcom many programs like gramps found gedcom limiting and you have to export in the xml format or convert using other programs or utilities.
Gedcom is ok but doesn't really go beyond so many generations, out includes limits on file size, doesn't really work for pictures and even between programs it doesn't really copy everything. So if I were keeping genealogy research I'd keep a paper back up, hard copy offline and two or more modern apps. So I can only imagine using a operating system without Unicode support or limited support os 8.5-9.2.2 or even Mac osx 10.6 would be impossible or highly unlikely to copy or migrate all the information correctly like different languages, currency support, years and such lol.
I have used multiple genealogy programs but there isn't really a replacement for good old physical backups and "work in fixing, importing gedcoms or somehow getting this info to other programs. Cheers.

I have an FM4 database for geneology that was "donated" to me by a professional developer. Its an early release of a DB application that he later ported to FM5 and above and sells now as a product.

It has woderfull features, like tree graphs and the like, but he expressivly forbade me to post that stuff on the web.  :-(
