Greetings. I have a Quadra 700 that currently has OS 8 installed. I want to install OS 7.1 on a separate partition; however, whenever I try to install from the genuine Apple floppy disk set I have for OS 7.1 I get a message that says the OS version is incompatible with the machine. Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this? I know the Quadra 700 was compatible with OS 7.1. |

The most likely cause is that your Quadra 700 requires a "special version" of System 7 (enablers) to work, so the floppies you have may be no good for the Q700. The good news is that you'll probably find the fitting install media for your Q700 on the Macintosh Garden. The bad news is that you'll need to transfer it to a media your Quadra 700 can read. Do you happen to have a CD-ROM drive for it? If not, do you have a "bridge Mac" that could write new floppy disks for it? Does your Quadra 700 have network (internet access) ?

The Q700 shipped with System 7.0.1 so in theory at least it should boot off any generic installer set of System 7.1. Are your 7.1 floppies installer disks generic or installers for a specific Mac? If they are for a specific Mac you may be running into enabler problems, with the OS on boot up trying to load an enabler for something other than a Q700. If such is the case you might work around it, but simply removing any System Enablers from the floppy set you have. This might allow the Q700 to boot. (If the disks are original you might wish to make a copy of the boot floppy and work on the copy)

Thank you both for your replies. So I made a mistake. In fact, I have System 7.0 media not 7.1. What I have is the 9-disc System 7 install kit. In the same box is also a networking disk as well as hypercard and some other stuff. I looked online and didn't see any mention of there being a special OS 7 version for the Quadra 700 which I understand was the case for some other Macs. I do have a SCSI CD-ROM drive with which I can successfully boot off my OS 7.6 CD. Nevertheless, I would really like to get OS 7 installed. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Ah, so there you go. Your floppies are one upgrade behind. Bummer! Well, there's two solutions that come to mind: 1.) The obvious: Grab your prefered image of Mac OS 7.1 from the Macintosh Garden. Burn it to a HFS disc. Boot OS8, insert the disc and start installing. 2.) Get a pre-installed bare-bones System 7.1. Burn that on a data CD, boot into OS8, and simply drag and drop System 7 to its final living quarters. You may need to "bless" the System Folder of 7. Not fully sure, but I think using a utility like "System Picker" should fix that.

@macdude888: Another method, if you'd like to try a floppy solution: Also at the Mac Garden are the System 7 Floppy Install Sets Your choices on that page (assuming English) are possibly: DL #4 for System 7.0.1 as 1.4MB floppy images (earliest Quadra 700 OS) DL #5 for System 7.0.1 as 1.4MB floppy images (international English) DL #7 for System 7.1 as 800k DD floppy images DL #8 for System 7.1 as 1.4MB floppy images Further down (#14 and on) are the System 7.5.x floppy disk images. [Edit] Just recapping on your 1st post, you mention that you'd like to install this OS onto on a separate partition. I suppose that you are aware that with a single HD classic Mac, that you'll need to wipe the existing HD (and its OS) and reformat the disk to create separate partitions. If you have already have created the two (or more) partitions, then it's not an issue. Just a reminder to back up your existing drive if you need to reformat the drive. Alternatively it is possible to install a 2nd OS on a single partition and use a System Picker to bless the System Folder you want to start up from. However I do not know if the System Picker is compatible with Mac OS 8. I think the DL #1 on that page would be the most likely to succeed. I do think however that separate partitions and using instead, the "Startup Disk" Control Panel to choose the correct System to boot up to, is the more elegant solution.

I trust MTT's detailed advice on this one ![]() And I do like the System Picker route as it gives you a way to boot two OSes from one partition ![]() So as others have mentioned the Quadra 700 came out prior to the 'enabler' generation of Macs, so System 7.1 and later System 7 OSes should all run fine on it. A 'universal' System 7.1 OS installer should be perfect. And as mentioned, without partitions you would be starting with a fully-erased hard drive, so having media to back-up to (or via the network to another old Mac) would be a good idea if the Mac has any stuff you'd want to save from it. Good luck!!
