Hello! I'm a complete noob when it comes to System 7. I only have experience with OS 9. I want to finally setup and configure my Quadra 700, but I'm not sure what version of System 7 to install; 7.5 or 7.6? Or something earlier? My Quadra has 36 MB of RAM. Also, should I install from CD or floppy (I have external SCSI drives)? Thanks in advance!

Welcome biteki!

A Quadra 700 makes a very nice System 7 Mac! I'd go with a System 7.1 if I were you and manually add a few extensions from 7.5+. See our updates list for 7.1 on 68k.

It's what I use on my Mac IIci with a Daystar Powercache as well.

As for Floppy or CD, you can pick whatever you want. Since 7.1 will need 5-6 floppies depending on your chosen options, it might be worth the nostalgic feeling of installing an OS from floppy :-)

Nice Mac, Biteki!! :D

I agree that the OSes closest to your Mac's era would run well, but also consider what applications or games you plan to run; so older games do better with older Mac OS 7 versions and newer games should do better with newer versions. For compatibility, I almost want to say that Mac OS 7.6.1 would your best bet, being a good solid Mac OS version for 68k Macs :)

But the best part is that you're free to try different versions and see what you like better. An old Gamba page was all about updating System 7.1.x with 7.5.x additions for maximum RAM savings and compatibility! ;)

So even a dual-boot with Mac OS 8.1 could work, but for users with 68k Macs, sticking with a 7.x version makes more sense since very few 68k programs would actually require OS 8 and its enhanced GUI uses more RAM and runs slower.

Other factors are disk drive size and if it's faster or slower, SSD and SD disks w/adapter being much faster options, especially when running virtual RAM and RAM disks.

As far as installing the OS, I'm thinking a CD install should be easier than a floppy install.

Thanks for the replies! Since I have several 68k Macs, I think I'll go with 7.1 for the Quadra 700 since that's more era appropriate. I don't have any specific use in mind for my Quadra, so I don't necessarily need maximum compatibility.

Actually, 7.1 should give you maximum compatibility, as it is still able to run older software that might break with 7.5 or higher. I find that especially the case with some older games.

If you add the updates from System 7 Today's important update section I've linked to above, you'll also get some of the extensions that came with 7.5, meaning your 7.1 will also be able to run programs that officially required 7.5 or 7.6 even.

Support for 68k stuff pretty much faded after 7.6 anyway.
