As some of you long-timers here in the forums may remember, my hobby apart from System 7 Macs is gardening.

So I've been making plans to construct a small greenhouse in my garden to prolong seasons. I was thinking about the best way to draft up my plan when it came to me that this would be another task that System 7.6.1 on my Power Mac 8600 should be perfect for.

I have, however, zero experience with CAD programs. Any recommendations for an approachable (!) home-user friendly application?

I'm basically looking to create a 3D wireframe model of the greenhouse with printed measurements?

Just a status update - I've since tried miniCAD 7 on my 8600, hoping that the "mini" would reflect a dumbed-down (feature-wise) CAD application that someone with no prior experience could use. Err.. no. It's not the case. Overwhelming options.

I'm thinking maybe I should rather go back to good ol' MacDraw or something. Might be an appropiate solution. But hey, I'm surprised - what do ya'll do with your Macs except games? No one really tried to draw something up on his old Mac ? ;-)

I think CAD software is something people go to school to learn to use efficiently. Claris had Claris CAD and perhaps like many Claris products it is easier to master. I stuck with paper and pencil for project drawings.

You got a point, wove. I may try Claris CAD and see if its complexity isn't as unapproachable as with miniCAD - or I'll just resort to good ol' MacDraw. Pen and Pencil would arguably be the easiest choice but then I have this mighty System 7 Macintosh on my desk - why not use it to draw up a 3D model of the greenhouse? ;-)

I used a program called Floorplan Plus recently on my PowerCenter Pro.  We have an oddly shaped living area and I wanted a diagram to make rearranging furniture, bookcases, and other items easier.  It took a little while to get used to it, but within an hour or two I had a floorplan.  Not sure if it is in the Garden - got my copy on eBay, new in the box.

That's interesting @mac-cellar - how about opening a thread and write some about how you approached the task and how it turned out? I love reading not only about hardware restoration, but what people actually use their old Macs for :-)

That said, Floorplan Plus isn't on the Garden yet. How about putting up an image for preservation & sharing?

I hope to find the time tonight to sit down and start another attempt, this time with MacDraw. We'll see about that.

OK, no problem.  Good idea.  I'll post something in the forums soon.

I think I finally found the program I was unknowingly looking for: CADintosh.

http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/cadintosh-40

It's from the maker of the well-known GraphicConverter (Lemke Software). Just like GC, it is aimed at the average user much rather than the professional. Good basic functionality meets an accessible interface. It can only do 2D drawings (I initially wanted a 3D wireframe model) but I can settle on that if it means less complexity.

Anyone ever tried CADintosh?

Man, I wish there was a page with tutorials for System 7 apps ... these days everything is on YouTube and for the latest and greatest. There used to be good courses on VHS, but they seem mostly lost these days.
